Protein Powder Stomach Issues

I have tried many different protein powders and wondering if anyone out there could help shed some light on something for me. I have used Syntha6, Dymatize Elite, Optimum Nutrition and a couple others over the years and always seem to run into the same thing. After using for a couple of weeks, twice a day, I start to run into blood in my stool and a sore ass. I have had hemorrhoid s before and this is not like that, but I assume somehow connected. I am very regular as it is and protein makes me dump usually three times per day. The after effects (blood and soreness) makes me steer away from protein powders which obviously makes building muscle that much harder since getting it all from food requires time in the day I don't have. Can anyone tell me:
1) What causes this?
2) A brand/type that is easier on the system?

Thanks in advance for any light you guys can shed on this!

If it's actual blood in the stool you should see a doctor ASAP. Blood in the stool could be internal bleeding. Is it dark blood or lighter/red? If dark get yourself to a doctor.

The absolute worste!!!! Lol goddamn!!

In all seriousness though, if you actually have blood in your stool, you need to go to the doctor bro, that is an issues far worse than any issue protein powder will cause you.

You aint lying bro! almost dread taking shits sometimes lol

And agreed. If its not caused by wiping, get that shit checked out

I is definitely not a major problem and not internal bleeding. More like on the outside of a log like a streak of bright red blood. I don't think it is from too much wiping, but maybe it is drying it out and making it crack or something? Doesn't feel raw or anything. Not sure what to make of it. Some proteins have been worse than others, but those have been the proteins that tear my stomach up and make me shit a lot. Not sure what to make of it. It is not all the time, and I don't really see it pop up unless I am taking shakes regularly (No pun intended).

but maybe it is drying it out and making it crack or something?

It's called an anal fissure. I used to get them all the time before I realized I was lactose and gluten intolerant and cut out those two foods. If it's happening from WPI you more than likely lactose intolerant.

Maybe I need to try using wipes instead of toilet paper and some sort of lotion when it pops up. Not having the issue now because I haven't had a shake in a few weeks due to it.

I am definitely not lactose intolerant. I drink probably 20 ounces of milk at every meal, and can eat yogurt, ice cream, cheese, etc. with no issue whatsoever. Like I said, it is not a problem all the time. Only when taking a lot of protein shakes and dropping a deuce several times a day because of it.

You may have to make the transition to carnivor protein. Beef isolate. Some people that can stomach dairy can't whey. As far as aminos protein count they are pretty darn similar. Whey may hit the muscle a couple of minutes faster then beef isolate but seriously what is two minutes? They are virtually the same thing. The down side...Beef isolate taste like rotten dead bodies with unsweetened chocolate sprinkled on top. There are no words to describe how awful it taste.

I agree that it's likely to be anal fissure. I have the same. Don't use any medicine without medic's prescriptions!. For the first time thoroughly wash your anal with warm soap water and use petrolatum after washing. You'd better do nothing else before doctor!

Would a fissure be made worse or triggered by protein or hitting the crapper more often due to the protein intake? Very frustrating because obviously not getting the extra from protein powder makes building muscle that much more difficult.

You could try supplementing with Fibrogel sachets... they soften your stools to allow the anal fissure to heal...

I'd go see your doc though and make sure it is an anal fissure first - if it is, he/she will prescribe the fibrogel.

To be fair, anus's aren't built to cope with the amount of sh*ts that bodybuilders bang out each day - so it's a common problem with people on a high protein diet.

Good luck bud.

Thanks, bro. I will look into it!

I get my protein powder with protease enzymes added and it has made a world of difference man. No bloating, no stomach issues what so ever any more. It was one of the best things i ever did.

could be a mild ulcer colitis. Sounds like it as protein powders can wreck people with it or cause them to flare. do some research on it and see a doc.

oh, also look into probiotics, like primal defense. They really can help with issues like this.

Yes I believe thats what protease is. Also bromilean (sp) is supposed to help in the digestion of proteins as well. Found in pineapple but can be bought in caps as a digestive aid.

Try adding more fiber and veggies to your diet. Once I started doing this, any issues I had before disappeared. Fiber is key though, not only for proper bowel movements but for proper digestion too.

What protein do you use?

Great info, fellas! Thanks!
