WPI whey protein isolates are the best fast acting portein, something with micellar casein in it for a bed time shake. They're only supplements they don't replace whole food protein.
Yes you got to take protein if you want to gain any mass! Whey protein will serve you best before and after you lift because it is absorbed quicker.
