Ok so lets say you've got enough fat on you to support 1000 calories worth of energy.(Hypothetically, I know this isn't realistic)

You burn off 500 of those calories, leaving you with 500. So as long as you eat maintenance calories so you have 500 left in reserve, your body wouldn't break down any muscle, Right?

Basically what I'm asking is, as long as you keep a little fat reserve, your body isn't going to start cannibalising muscle for fuel?

not true... if i understood what your asking..

as long as your keep at maint level your body wont lose muscle.. as soon as you drop under that maint level ur body will start to lose muscle.. how much muscle it loses is based upon how your restricting ur diet.. e.g. keto is known for anti-catabolism.. eating the right carbs at the right time.. using certain suppliments.. everyone is also a bit diff...
