Terrible lower back pain.

Noxious

Unsung Hero
Ok,this has been going on for about 2 months now,my lower back has been stiff and sore, but lately my back pain is just too much.

It all starte when I began doing power deadlifts at the start of the summer. In the beginning my form was terrible(which has since been corrected by my trainer guy who told me I looked like a spaz, haha)

I'm only doing about 170x8 max for power deadlifts at the moment(I'm far from being as strong as most of you guys are.)

Anyways,I think the combination of poor form and my summer job where I had to lift pallets, bags of soil, trees, etc. all summer has messed up my lower back.

I've tried stretching it out well after workouts but it doesn't really seem to help.

When I wake up first thing in the morning it feels fine, but as the day goes on it gets tighter and tigher. Even sitting in the drivers seat of my car causes pain.

I tried taking a week off from doing deadlifts, but my back is still in bad shape.

I just need some advice on what I can do to help my lower back heal up,and keep it from getting like this in the future.

Do you lack medical insurance or is there some other reason why getting medical help isn't an option?

Oh,I was told they were 'power deadlifts'....Just not stiff legged deadlifts.

Oh,I do have medical insurance(I live in Canada.) I just have been trying to tough through it in hopes of it going away. I guess I was hoping it would go away.

yeah, you basically have a problem (which you yourself articulated). if you are fine with the pain, then continue with your current regiment. if you want to heal, then: a) stop doing deadlifts for at least 1-2 weeks; ice/heat; stretch; pop a consistent flow of anti-inflam pills for 1-2 weeks; stop lifting trees; or b) goto an ortho to get checked out. at 19, you're WAY too young to be jacked. i was the same way at your age, and life has been a challenge ever since.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm going to take some time off and hopefully recover.

I'll let you know.

So are they SLDL or not? I'm still not clear on how you hurt your back. Spinal curve is extremely important, if you allow the back to round you risk injury.

I worked in warehousing for years and I have no real back problems to date from such things. Some of the pallets that I threw, were 55 pound "Chep" pallets. You just have to pay attention to how you hold your spine.

Good luck

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Mudge,I hurt my back from a summer of lifting at work with poor form. (Those damn chep pallets combined with trees, soil, etc.) Lifting in the gym just seemed to make it worse. My form for deadlifts has since been corrected however.

I took some time off from lifting and my back feels alot better,I can almost bend at the waist again without discomfort. I talked to a trainer who advised me to not do deadlifts for 4-6 weeks.

Thanks for the advice guys,

Rob:

I've suffered from a very bad low back for about 13 years, sincce i was 16! Stretching the area of your back that is hurting is probably not the best option. you need to stretch the surrounding muscles that affect the back. do a search on a yoga stretch called "the pigeon." seriously. that stretch alone has made a tremendous difference for me. also stretch your hamstrings and hip flexors religiously.

obviously, all this assumes you don't have an acute injury of some sort. with free medical care, its worth just getting checked out. if they find nothing, and you still don't get relief, look into Active Release Techniques (ART) and Prolotherapy. They have both been a Godsend for me.
