The Worst Machine in the Gym

It’s interesting what money will make people do. I envision some inventor for a fitness equipment company sitting at his desk one day when his wife walks in to tell him what a nightmare her pap smear was. Then he starts thinking, "Hey, people go to the gym to torture themselves…"

And the hip adduction machine was born.

But that is not the worst machine in the gym; it’s merely useless. In fact, there are plenty of useless machines in the gym. There are others that are half decent. Before I go on my rant, I will say that I have occasion to use some of the basic machines.

Granted, my training only involves barbells, no machines for me... I absolutely despise the leg press machine.

It's seriously a gigantic cop out. Put a fuckin barbell on your back and squat. end of story.
 
Yep, it's the knees that make the leg press important to us old guys. I'm sad to read that it exposes the back to injury.

I wish I could do the hack squat machine, but it really hurts the knees. So I figure the leg press is better than nothing.

Tape those bad boys up and don't lock them!!

If your knees are hurting do lighter weight.

I started on the leg press, then got brave enough for the hack squat machine and once I gained a little more confidence I ended up doing squats. I definitely see their point about real world application with an anchored back and pushing full strength with your legs. No my leg work outs consist of squats, hack squats, and some lunges from time to time.
 
honest question:
For those with bad knees, how is your form? After experiencing knee pain during squats, I devoured information about squatting (Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength is amazing).. I found I was advertantly placing weight on my knees instead of forcing. Just a thought :)
 
Its those adductor and abductor machines. If some hottie in shorts or tights... Oh damn, its a major distraction and lose my train of thought and focus. And being on test makes it worse. I feel the need for a cig.. And I don't smoke. Lol
 
Although I do squats with light weight, the leg press for me is a necessity. Ive had 3 hip replacements and Im 38. I still like to go heavy but no way Im putting that much weight on this expensive hip. I think all machines serve a purpose even if it is just for rehab or working around injuries.
