Training For Sporting events

l'll use a Long distance run as an example...when you are coming up to an event and to get yourself to be at peak performance would u increase the intensity of the exercises Right near the event "say you got 1 week till the event" or would you Completley rest certain exercises to make yourself peak?
 
no matter i figured it out...for long distance running you'll wanna completley drop the volume but keep the intensity high-ish
 
i think for most sports you will try to be just short of a peak, training at a max intensity up to a couple of days before. Then rest a day or two so you are fresh and come out and peak
