OK so ive just found out ive been training the complete wrong way and ive been told to lower my reps and work on different bodys parts only about once per week.
i have a couple of questions about this.
first of all if i can do 15 reps with a weight without really pushing myself to the limit is it to light?

also if i need to do 8 reps with a weight then how many sets of 8 should i be doing in one session.

also im working out 6 times a week is this to often, how many times should i be working out baring in mind im not really working on my legs im mainly just working on my arms chest and abs.

last question how long per day should i be working out roughly,

Im not looking to be huge i just want to be about the size and cut of brad pitt in the fight club movie for an example. at the moment am quite a slim build with to much body fat.
any help would be great thanks

Cheers fellas

something like this:

bench press 3-4 sets of 8 -could be incline, decline, flat, barbell, dumbells...many combos)
another chest exercise for 2-3 sets of 8 (maybe more dumbell work, maybe flyes)
a shoulder press 2-3 sets of 8(barbell, dumbells, seated, standing, etc)
a tricep extension 2 sets of 10(with dumbbells, ex-curl bar, cables)

Your reps should be around 8. Your weight shouldn't allow you to do more than 8 or 9. In other words, the 8th one should be a serious struggle, and for the 9th (if you had a spotter) you would require his/her help.

REad the stickes, as they have some good routines. After you read them, put together your own routine and we can help you tweak it. Were not going to do all the work for you :). Just a tip, focus on the big 3 (bench, deadlift, squat) and other compound exercises.

as you go through lifting, you can vary your reps/sets. there is no permanent sets/reps. nothing wrong with high reps. nothing wrong with low reps. how long you spend in the gym depends on what kind of training you do.

if u do your 15 rep routine once more try this. after the 15th rep ask yourself if you can do one more, if it is physically possible. Try to do just one more rep. i know for a fact you will be able to, probably even 2-3 more. that means your not going as hard as you can.

i tried doing as many reps as possible before i felt like i was going to drop the weight on myself and i got out 21 reps. Sometimes im scared of pushing myself to far because i dont have a spotter. i have my spair room set up as a gym and im there alone.

I guess i need to buy some heaver weights and get myself a training partner.

thanks for the help :)

training partner is great cus aside from a spotter he gives you tips on form and you can share routine ideas, diet etc. if you need to go heave just load the weight on without clips. try it with a weight your comfortable with - let it hit your chest and then just tilt the bar, the weights should slide right off.
