i typically eat a REAL meal before a work out...about 1 hr to 1hr 30 min before hand.
if i do use a shake i use a mix of whey and whole raw eggs along with some other good stuff like lecithin and coconut oil.

I do the same......I prefer a real meal before I work out and a shake post workout.
I think you should have something in your stomach before you workout for muscle gain. Solid food is best because of the extra nutrients compared to a shake.
