I normally try to take mine post workout but as long as your taking it, it will be effective. Depending on what kind, mono you can do as stopstalking said. If you get the chance look into APS creatine nitrate stuff is wicked good.

I personally dose only 5g a day and on workout days aim for 1hr to 45min pre workout as it takes around that long for creatine to hit the blood stream IIRC.
When not dosing monohydrate, I have had a great experience with Controlled Labs Green MAGnitude. Green apple taste is pretty killer
