Wide Grip Chins / Weighted Chins

I was wondering how many wide grip chins you guys can do.

Right now I can only get about 8 - 10 (depending on the day) with my bodyweight. My goal is to be able to do 3 sets of 12, then I can start to add weight. I just started to do these over the last month or so, and hopefully the addition of rack chins will help with this feat too.

I'm not a huge fan of wide grip pullups. Normal pullups are just fine for back development (see my avatar). Alternating chins and pullups can definitely add a lot of mass, and you cause use more weight with these lifts.

I don't know how many wide grip pullups I can do, but last I tried I got 12 pullups off a concrete ledge (tore my hands up!) and 16 chins on a thick bar. But the real fun stuff...weighted chins. I'm able to do 3 with 90 lbs at 215 lbs bodyweight and do sets of 6 with 60 lbs. That'll surely pack some mass on you.

If you ever see one of those fat guys in the gym that like to show off how strong they are, see how many chins they can do. They'll probably say they can't do any cause they weigh so much more than you, but they're just making excuses for being weak ;)

Don't wait until you can do 3 sets of 12, becuase it might take forever to get there. Chins are a funny exercise, I probably couldn't do 3 sets of 12 (at 180lbs currently) but I can do 3 sets of 6 with 45 lbs added

I don't think I could do 3x12, but I do know that weighted chins can accelerate increasing your max reps.

i weigh 210, and do weighted chins with +70 for 6 reps. I can do bodyweight for ~ 20 reps if Im fresh

Yeh that's basically me too:)

Dunno how many BW chins I can get right now I'm just doing 30 reps of pullups as a warmup for my back days...took me 4-5 sets last time but I am using short rest times....

Do you guys use straps on the pullups? I weened myself of them recently....

Trust me Easto, when you start adding some weight to those Rack Chins you will be able to pump off Regular Chins...

damn, ill definitely have to try those someday....they look hard. Just curious...how much more efficient is this compared to weighted chins?

How would this be more efficient? Looks extremely tricky when you could just toss on a dip belt. I don't even know how you'd set that up.

They are by far the best Back Width exercise I have ever done, we r/p these out for 15-20 reps using the Smythe machine and a incline or decline bench and I get my training partner to add a bar with weight on it to make them even harder, explosive positive and controlled negative. You can also add weight with a back pack with plates in it, dip belt turned backwards and the weight hanging off your ass or you can just chain plates to the back of your own belt.

Most people can not do a lot of chins especially when you start weighing quite a bit and you will deffinitly feel these in your Lats...

What's the difference between this and a weighted pullup?

Try them and you'll be able to answer this question yourself.

You can't cheat (Check the foot positioning - both feet are crossed to take the legs out of the movement) and the next day your lats will be very sore.

The pump you get after rack chins cannot be obtained with any other exercise.

Guys, try it out and I guarantee you'll love them. I have never read any posts where someone didn't think rack chins were a great exercise.

I've heard nothing but GREAT things about Rack Chins for improving Back width! There's absoultely no way you can cheat like you can with regular Chins using momentum. Your main focus is on form by letting your arms fully extend at the bottom and coming up into a full contraction at the top. All you need to build a great back are Rack Chins, Reverse Grip Rows, One Arm Rows, T-Bar Rows, Deadlifts & Nautilus Pullovers.

Hmm, I can't really try them. Not only do I work out alone, I have a home setup, and setting that up sounds very tricky.

But it's pretty difficult to cheat with chins when you have 60 lbs between your knees ;)
