world record RAW bench

Damn! I know I'll never see that kind of weight on the bench, impressive as hell! What's up with the smelling salts and him shaking like a leaf before the lift? Nerves? I've been out of the powerlifting scene for well over a decade, so that's new to me.

The smelling salts give you almost like a quick adrenaline rush and fires the nerves and muscles. When you sniff them it irritates the mucous membrane in your nose and lungs and triggers an inhalation reflex that makes the muscles that control breathing work faster. Not recommended to use them often as they can cause some issues but they work pretty good for a big meet or game

Wow, I had never thought of that. I wonder how long this practice has been in use as I had never seen it before. Thanks for the info! :D

It's been around for a while at least. I know when I was in HS late 90's into early 00's we used to do it during games for the "big plays" in football and my coach had used it even before that so I'm sure professionals have know about it for quite some time

Hmm, I remember it in football as a means of helping a guy recover from getting his ass knocked out, but hadn't seen it in the gym before. I used to hang with a lot of competing guys too, so maybe I was just not paying attention. Kooky!

When I started powerlifting in the mid '80s it was already pretty accepted practice in my gym. Either ammonia capsules or little brown bottles of "ammonia inhalant USP" (something like that). These days I use caps mostly, but I also keep little pill bottles with a bit of rag and a splash of ammonia and a few bottles of Nose Tork. in my bag.

It's really like having a partner slap you in the face, but it doesn't leave marks. Also it really lets you breath as clearly as you've ever breathed for a few seconds.

Man, I totally must have somehow missed that as I was pretty in with the powerlifting crowd in the mid 90's to early 2000's. Thanks for the information! I always love learning new things. :D
