Don't think of it like there's such a thing as "too much" recovery time. I used a 2 on 2 off program for a long time with great success, and now I've moved down to 3 days per week and I like it even more.
Everyones recovery time needs are different! How much intensity, volume, etc, are things that come into play. And things like daily stress, amount of sleep, diet, etc come into play. YOU need to find what works for YOU.
