Sniffing ammonia, bleach, or whatever it may be that powerlifters are sniffing, is supposed to release adrenaline. However, yes it can damage brain cells. If it's worth it is your decision.

That is why I like my gym--no music whatsoever--just lots of clanging, grunting, and the occasional vomiting after squats--hell to some people heaven to a certain class of psychos.
