aspirating and air instead of blood

A buddy of mine has been doing his shots and I've noticed on 3 occasions that instead of blood or nothing coming out air ran into the syringe while aspirating. And there was nothing in the syringe before doing the shot. So we always have to take the needle out and get the air out again. What the hell could be causing this? Is it just bad needles or something, or is there something we might be hitting in his shoulder that is filled with air. I don't understand this at all.

i had that a few times.. i was like WTF???? did not worry and still injected with no problems....i dont asperate as hard anymore... all it takes is a little bit to know if u are in a vein.

You should only pull back slightly and get a tiny air bubble or two, nothing to worry about. If he is getting so much air that he has to pull out and get rid of the air bubbles, then he is pulling back on the plunger WAY TOO MUCH.

The other thing is; if you pull back with too much pressure, you can collapse the vien you are in and get no blood at all, even though you are in a vien.

Sometimes we see residual air that was left in the barrel of the needle, or in the hub, that didn't clear. Also, negative pressure (such as is created when we pull back on the plunger, will cause dissolved gases to come out of solution; the harder you aspirate, the larger the bubble appears. There is nothing in the muscle that has air in it! The only way to get air upon aspiration, other than what I've already mentioned, is if you're in the lung! ;-0
BTW, and I've mentioned this before, a small air bubble in the syringe is not a threat. I routinely leave a small bubble in the syringe to insure that all the gear goes in (the bubble is the last thing to go through, and it clears the needle). Even if you were in a vein, the air is not a problem; the oil is. In air injected into the muscle is resorbed by the body quite quickly.

bro i never get anything but what looks like air your not supposed to pull back hard enough to suck your insides out , just hard enough to see if you are in a vein , but i would check to make sure that the pin is screwed tight on the barrel

All you really have to do to aspirate is flick the plunger with your thumb. What you're seeing as "air" is just vacuum.
