how many calories over the body's bmr are really needed to gain weight... I read on a post here to ingest 500 more calories a day to gain weight, but on another site i read that u should take in 1000 more calories a day. What is the better number.. If my bmr tells me I need 2000cal/day to maintain my weight how many more calories should I really add. Thanks for the help guys....

500-1000 is more of a range and depends on the individual. you want to go with whatever amount allows you to put on weight with the least amount of fat. too much weight gain too fast will come with unnecessary fat gain.

It depends on so many factors, but I would start with 500, then bump it up. All of a sudden throwing down an extra 1000 kcal can wreak havoc on your body (digestion, bloat, fat gain, etc) A steady increase is better, IMO

Remember, when you add muscle your BMR will increase. As you add muscle you need to add food to keep the gains coming.
