Quick stupid question.

To burn fat while doing cardio you should work at 65 - 75% of your maximum heart rate. Do you just go by the guides on the machine for your age and stay within that range?

My resting heart beat is 74 beats per minute and for a 34 year old it says I should be at 117 beats a minute to burn fat.

I'd prefer to use a heart rate monitor. Those ones on the machines aren't very reliable. Alternatively just use your pulse to guage it.

That's a pretty good guide for max heart rate even though it's really general. If you're really serious about heart rate training do some more research and get a heart monitor so you can really personalize your training.
