Do you really need 2 Grams of protein per pound you weigh?

I have been a vegetarian for 26 years now. I do not eat any meat, fish or eggs. All my protein comes from Beans, Soy, Dairy, Nuts & Protein shakes. As it is I choke down 3 shakes a day and still on my best day I only get about 160 grams of protein. The problem is I weigh 225lbs and from what I have heard I should be getting 450 grams of protein. Is this true? Can anyone give me any advise besides to start eating meat.
For the record I turn 32 in June. I became a vegetarian when I was 6.

If you want maximal growth then on cycle 2.0grams and off cycle 1.5grams. Anybodys whos tried to eat this amount of protein has seen more growth with less AAS, which is why i think everybody should do it. I eat 500grams per day, 50% from shakes.

I dont know how i would do it as a veggie tho...
 
Personally I don’t think you need high protein intake and there is also very little scientific evidence that protein intakes higher than 0.8 - 1.0 g/lb. will increase muscle growth. However the research as always is too little and poor quality. I do however believe it is better to be safe than sorry and so I do take normally about 1.5 g/lb. The other benefit of having a high protein diet is that it is metabolically costly and therefore helps you to control body fat.
 
the best gains i've ever made was when my protein intake was through the roof, more protein=bigger muscles, try increaseing the amount in your shakes, look up dogcrapp or dc training and read his protein recommendations
