Filtering necessary to sterilize??

NYCEE

Brewing.....
I know this has been discussed before, and i personally would never inject something that i havent personally filtered, but i came across a thread on the cutting edge forums discussing this. A lot of people say that BA is there to prevent any additional bacteria growth, but i was reading this study provided by Restless, and it seems to state the contrary, that in fact BA does sterilize the solution. I just wanted to see what you guys think about this. Here is the study, again it was posted by Restless on the cutting edge forums:

You can specifically look at the Table 4 section, this is a quote from it:

"Results of the preservative screening tests showed that the formulations containing 0.75% and 0.5% benzyl alcohol are potential candidates to meet the USP/EP criteria (Table 4). Both formulations demonstrated a complete kill of the tested bacterial and fungal species after 7 days. "

Just looking for thoughts on thsi subject, as it was very interesting to me. Thanks

Nice study. On top of that, whatman guarantees a sterile soultion after filtering as long as nothing was comprimised after the filter. What I get from it all is that the combination of ba, filtering and baking offers us enough to consider all our brews sterile.

Is filtering necessary to sterilize? Well ba may kill or stop bacteria growth but it will never remove small particals from our oils.

I agree 100%, i just found the study very interesting as many have claimed that BA doesnt sterilize and this study is contrary to the claims.

The way I look at it is this, we are doing this in our homes, some with pets, children, porn, etc. I want to make sure as I can within reason that I have a sterile solution. If it costs me an extra $2 to do this, that is reasonable.

If all you want to do is add some ba to the mix and not filter or bake, fine.

I filter (for tren pellets I double filter), bake, sometimes bake again, hell I even do a sterilization jig. The last thing I want to do is go to the doctor and tell him I think I have an abscess and I have no idea why -blink blink blink-.

Again, i would never inject something i havent personally filtered myself. Just looking for some thoughts on the BA sterilizing, as i remember a few people on the forum said that BA didnt sterilize.

Yeah, a few people have said that, and I tend to believe them. The way I see it is if all you needed was a touch of ba, then that's all these bigger companies would use. Instead, they do all the stuff like we do, i.e. sterile filtering, heating, etc.

It's kinda like aspirating, have you ever pulled back blood? I haven't. I think in all the time I've been going over these forums I've read one, maybe two counts of it happening. So if you said you did some research and that aspirating wasn't necessary, you'd be right most of the time.

I just don't want to be that 1% that gets an abscess.

Im gald you said this. Its rediculous how many homebrew labs pop-up, doing this in thier kitchens or basements. Who knows how much dust and shit is in the air...and these guys are capping thier own vials!! You should never, ever crimp your own vials in a non-sterile environment period. But, people will always just buy and shoot, trusting the kid who made it like hes a lab technician. Just because most will never have a problem doesnt mean you should take your chances.

ba is used as a preservative. i have had two infections and both where from mex gear that was loaded with ba. i have never had an infection from any of my home brew (made with out ba). i have posted several reports on here about the properties and uses of ba. thats the first one i have seen to the contrary for oily solutions. aqueous solutions are another ball game. ba is a solvent with some antimicrobial properties. does this mean that you gonna get an infection if you dont flter? maybe maybe not. its like russian roullette. as with any topic you wll find contradictory data but if the majority of validated data leans a certain way i tend to go that way and not the other. comprende' amigos?
