Flax Oil vs. Fish Oil?

I have heard different opinions on which of the above to take as a good fat supplement. The only difference I have seen in the two is that Fish Oil makes my skin oilier. Is there a substantial difference in the two?

it is my understanding that we should take both because fish oil gives you EPA and DHA and flax gives you ALA. Now our bodies have the ability to convert the EPA and/or DHA into ALA but it does not do it at a very efficient rate, especially as we get older. So I take both fish oil and Flax. as far as the skin oil, i haven't noticed that too much personally. i have noticed however, that fish oil gives me an improved sense of well being. Makes me better adjusted and less stressed for some reason.

How much of these do you take?? I know for sure that I'm not getting enough fat in my diet...but it seems like just taking the rec. dosage isn't enough from what I've read...:dunno:

Thanks, Tman. That's good info!

In the offseason, I take in 1000mg a day. When I'm dieting down, I will increase it to 2-3000mg. I try to accommodate any drop in my calories with the added fat.

According to Dr. John Crisler, any ammount is beneficial, but he recommends, I think, as much as 10g/day (of fish oil).

From what I have read, 4 - 6 grams (usually 1 gram per capsule) should be sufficient for most people who workout. People who do not workout probably do not need that much.

Good tips, everybody. But, I'm still on the fence as to which one of these would be the better supplement? From what I pull from T, it's best to take them both together, but is that entirely necessary or is one better than the other.
I get good deals on both at the store, I was just wondering. It seems I'm already taking a fistful of vitamins already, if I could be more exact with my fats, it'd be nice!

If you can only take one, take fish oil. Just realize that you won't be getting any EFAs except whatever you pick up in your diet. Still, I think the EPA and DHA are more important.

By the way, tman, you had it backwards. Our bodies can convert ALA into EPA and DHA but the conversion rate is very poor. That's why it is a good idea to get fish oil. EPA and DHA are omega 3's, while the ALA in flax oil is an EFA as well as an omega 3.

Thank you, that's a definitive answer.

Thank you, glad you approve! What can I say, I prefer to indulge oneself! ;)

isn't there a efa suplement that has all the omega's in it?if not then why not take all fish, olive and flax.i sympathize about having to take a mouthful of suplements everyday, but isn't that a nessasary evil we have to indure to do the things we want to do.if you supose to get all the omega's 3,6,9's then i'm doing that whatever the amount of shit i got to take everyday!

I don't know of the supplement you are talking about, but if you can remember what it is, I would appreciate it. Thanks!
I also realize what sacrifices we are to make, I've been doing this for some time now. I just wanted to see what, if any, were the differences between the two. I haven't really heard anything defining each's seperate benefits and differences. I know some people just simply have preferences, which is what I wanted to push thru.

There is a combo of 3's and 6omegas in one gel cap. That's what I use. A couple of those with every meal.
