Keep focusing on mens glutes
Check out Bret Contreras' website Bret Contreras - How to Build Strong, Powerful Glutes and Increase Your Explosive Strength, Speed, and Athleticism. If Great Glutes are Your Goal, then You've Come to the Right Place. Master's Degree and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist for all the info on the subject you could ask for.
As others have said, DL and squat do a pretty good job. I do GHD raises, which hit the glutes, hamstrings and lower back.
I lost all respect for bret when he started claiming that squats dont work the glutes - complete bullshit as anyone who's done squats properly before would know.
It was pointed out to him that the the studies he conducted to establish this were flawed methodologically but instead of being a man and accepting the constructive feedback - he decided to stand by his flawed studies & treat the criticism as hate for hates sake.
In terms of training the glutes:
- Fast twitch muscle requiring low explosive reps e.g. 8-12 with slow eccentric portion taking 3 secs or so. None of this high rep nonsense.
- Glute bridges & hip thrusts are good exercise choices to place max intensity on the glutes & not elsewhere.
The glutes happen to be the most attractive male bodypart according to numerous polls conducted by women so if your training to impress girls or be "aesthetic" & your not training glutes...time to reassess your programme![]()
Dude he based a 600 page butt training book on EMG research that he conducted in the wrong way - basically he had no idea what he was doing from a methodological standpoint.
If I conducted some studies, using a method I had no idea about, producing data that was completely flawed as a result & then wrote a 600 page book based on this flawed data - would you take me seriously?
I'd like to think not![]()
It would certainly hurt his credibility, but shouldn't mean everything he says is wrong. I have always been skeptical of his EMG results myself but I still think he has useful advice to give. Do you have a link that describes the process with his methodology?
I've learnt through experience that if a so called guru is wrong about one thing, and wont admit it, he's probably wrong about a bunch of other things he wont admit - ego's get in the way in this industry unfortunately.
I dont have a link per se, but wikipedia "electromyography" will give you a solid understanding of it.
You have two types of emg: surface (electrode placed over muscle) & fine needle (needle inserted into specific points of muscle).
Surface emg is easier to do but prone to more confounds, even fine needle emg requires alot of needles placed in alot of specific points of a muscle - goodluck finding volunteers to let you do a thorough fine needle emg.
Bret didnt have a clue about how to apply emg & pretty much made it up as he went along - hence the flawed results that were met with heavy criticism.
