Muscle "tone" doesn't exist, friend. Tone is a word invented to sell thighmasters to women who didn't want to "look bulky" or get off the couch.
So if you want to cut up a bit, at 5'8", you're going to gain actual lbs, but you'll lose bodyfat. Which is okay in my book. Why don't you do the normal crossfit stuff? I gather you wouldn't mind looking like Rich Froning etc? So high-intensity, full-body exercise on intervals or for less than 15 minutes. Classic example being Cindy:
As many rounds as possible in 20 minutes:
5 pullups
10 pushups
15 air squats (bend at the waist, back upright, full depth)
If you go hard enough, you should be gasping afterwards. You don't need any equipment (well, a pullup bar you can find at a playground or buy one As Seen On TV for $15.99 or whatever).
Tabata sprints. Well, tabata anything. Rowing on a C2, hill climbs, situps, pushups, burpees, etc.
This stuff isn't hard. What are your actual goals here? Also, if you're a "skinny fat" at 165, maybe your diet needs a little help.
