How harmful are steroid creams?

HI,

My son is 2.8 years old and suffering with sever eczema. It started very early when he was 2 months old. I have used hydrocorisone(1%) once a day on and off until he was 2 years old. It was just on his knee folds and few patches on his back. But from 6 months ago it started getting worse. It slowly appeared on other parts of his body like legs, arms, neck, cheeks, eyelids etc. At the same time I came to know about the side effects of steroid creams and I stopped applying hydrocortisone. I was just using vaseline. We tried homeopathy which had no effect on him. Then we decided to do an allergy test. It was very shocking to know that he has very high allergy to dust and dust mites. He is also allergic to milk, peanuts sesame seeds etc. We have eliminated all these from his food. But his eczema is still very bad. We are also mopping the house everyday, changed his bed, matress etc. But there is no change in his skin. The doctor also gave Zyrtec(antihistamine) and a cream Atopiclair (non steroid cream). We are using this from three weeks but no effect. He doesnot sleep in the night and because of itching, very irritated and cranky all the time. Its very difficult see him in this condition. His entire body is covered with red, itchy patches. Is how harmful it is use hydrocortisone or any other steroid creem for a toddler? I have lost hopes in everything else. This is one thing which I have not used 7-8 months. Not able to decide if I should use steroid cream as I have heard they are harmful.

Please help.

I did not find the right solution from the internet.

Lookup "Treating eczema and dermatitis in infants" by Janine Acero. I can't post the link, but should point you in the right direction. You need to find out what is triggering all those allergies. Probably diet.

For the dust and dust mites, you should look into getting an air cleaner with triple filtering, active coal, hepa and forgot the last.
My mom uses it and says it made a world of difference for her.

This also sounds like something that should be done with a physician and/or specialists. I feel uncomfortable reading about young children and internet science... :(

Do you have a Local Children's Hospital.
I'm in Philly, and we have CHOP or Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Google for a Children's Teaching Hospital in your Locale.
Someone there will be able to help you.................................. JP

Hello and welcome to the board. :wavey:

I have raised 3 children and now helping too raise my two grandkids. I feel for you putting up with your son's plight as long as it's been. I know what it's like to look at your child in pain and have you hands tied, so to speak, and can't just wish it away.

This forum may not be a lot of help because we're not doctors however Steroidology is loaded with members who can point you in a direction to begin such as the article Tankman mentioned

Stick w us and keep us posted
By all means let us know what you come up with so we all can learn something. AND of course tell us how you baby is doing.

Steroidology believe it or not has many caring members. I'm sure you will have some members pray about this.

Good luck,
OMM
