Is there any real reason the vast majority of us recreational lifters can't use this form of dieting?

I would be particularly interested in hearing 3J's take on it

Because IFFYM doesn't take into account trans and saturated fats consumed. Not all calories and macros are equal.

Try losing weight with IFFYM but eating high trans fat foods. The transfat takes up to a month to be digested...thus all the shit you're eating is sitting in you for that month while you're trying to lose weight.

Compared that to NOT eating those fats and they'll be digested and excreted within the next 2 days...hence losing weight quicker

I know the guy who actually came up with the IIFYM concept back on the bb forums and recommend watching this video explaining everything:

After watching that, and understanding exactly what the concept of IIFYM is, good luck making any sort of logical argument against it :)

Also, anecdotally I'm not aware of any successful natural bodybuilder who doesn't use IIFYM...take that for what its worth.

I track what I eat every day in My Fitness Pal. I have had 0 grams of trans fat in the last week. I agree with your point in that you still want to make good choices. But if you want to indulge in a treat and IFYM, why not?

I would say that once you know how to eat properly - and by that I mean actually sticking to a proper diet plan without cheating for at least a year - then I see no problem with using IIFYM. Before that, you simple do not know enough and it is too dangerous to do.

What are the dangers in your mind?

And what is wrong with an occasional cheat meal? Say on Thanksgiving or your child's birthday party for example.

I use the seefood diet. I see food, I eat food :) works fantastic for me.

To answer the question, no there is no reason why the anverage fuys who just wants to lift and look good cant use that method. Its only when you start competing seriously that using that could be your downfall.

Lol...dangerous

ill keep this one short...

I dont have an issue with the true concept of IIFYM.. its the application of the philosophy that really grinds my gears..

I personally do not believe that all calories are created equal.. what i mean to say is that macro timing is important in my books..

its these stupid n00bs that think they can eat mcdonalds all day and so long as they "meet their macros" theyll be fine..

everyone does some form of IIFYM in the long run..

my clients diets do not follow this approach in cutting because they come to me with specific goals and i want to make the diet as optimal as possible..

but if you want to make bodybuilding a lifestyle youre def going to use some form of IIFYM in the long run.. its about finding balance..

if you were to have a 300/300/80 macro goal daily.. and lets say youve hit 270/240/50 already eating foods that are good for you, unprocessed and such.. and you wanted to have some ice cream, you could get away with that..

why? because youve already done a good job of getting the right foods in.. balancing your nutrition

but IIFYM to cut for a show?? stupid... this is for every day living.. giving you the opportunity to find balance in your life between your goals and your sweet tooth.. for example..
