Is Leg Press needed IYO?

If you do all the different types of squats (normal, front, sissy, hack), are Leg Presses still necessary? And no, I dont do all those on the same day.

I also do lunges, leg extentions, and leg curls.

Is Leg Press still necessary? I think squats does everything that leg press does, plus more. What do you think?

Thanks..... Please dont answer unless you have been training seriously for at least 10 years, or your a personal trainer or something. I dont want anyone to answer who has tiny legs, or thinks they know everything because they are on the internet.

I think squats done with good form and heavy weight should be the core or your leg program, yes if you squat hard enough you should be able to eliminate leg presses. I make squats the core of my program, if you want big legs squats are a must.

Thats EXACTLY what im thinking.

I mean, if your doing all the different squats with great form, leg presses are not needed.

sounds like you know the answr to your question already!!! like you said squats are a must..pesonally i never got much from leg presses..ive tried everything from the heavy weights low reps to higher reps..i prefer squats, front squats, hacks, reverse hacks..in that order

more weight or not, squats are still the best and they force your entire body to grow.

But I thought exercises that allow you to use more weight build more mass for the area being worked?

But you can move more weight when doing leg presses than with squats, so does that help build more mass than squats?
nope your overlooking the fact that the machine gives you leverage so while the weight may be greater than with squats the load is different..i can do reverse hacks with 20 plates right down to para and up for 8 solid reps..i cant even come close to that many plates with free bar ssquats :p ..

Maybe that leverage helps you to push more, and maybe it works the muscles harder because of that? I dont know. What do you think?

i dont think machines are all that bad..they do have a purpose..i have tried workout s with just heavy hacks instead of squatting and personally reg squats worked my legs a lot harder..i think leg presses got popular because most of the top BB'ers are a fraid to squat once they reach a certain weight..afraid to risk injury which is understandable when your making a living from the sport so they resort to leg presses which may not build the legs quite as good as squats but its definitely able to maintain the muscle that they have or pre exhaust it so that they can use lighter weighhts for squats..

Great post man. Thanks. So maybe leg press is ok once a month or whatever...

Ruhl cant do squats because he cant reach back that far to grab the bar that is on his back. He said its because his shoulders are too massive, and he just cant reach. He does leg press most of the time, and when he does squats, he does front squats and says it works great.

Thanks again guys.

nothing wrong with throwing something into a routine to see how it works..i got his vid his leg press is sick lol..but what built those quads were heavy squats..i can see that being a prob with markus those delts are freaky big..hell he MP's more than most people can squat lol

there are sojme monsters in PLing who squat. if they can reach the bar so can markus. its called stretching i have to strech my delts and pecs for about 5 minutes before i can grab the bar. i know some big benchers who cant touch thier chest with the bar until they stretch out. how tight is that?

anyway i use the leg press for assitance work for the bottom end of my dead. since i try to get the bar to my knees with quads and savee my back and hams for lock out it works great for this.

for the average gym rat who is just looking to be purdy leg presses are not necessary. neither is "all differnt kind of squats". regular old fasion squats work better than anything else for mass/strength gains. box squats are great for "out of the hole power" and teaching good squat form.

lifting weights is a simple task. it relies on more heart than brains. if too much grey matter gets involved the numbers stop climbing.

I"ve recently moved and my gym equipment hasn't arrived yet...so I'm training at a local gym down the street. I can't squat or GM heavy there...so I do what I can with the squats and deads...then I'll finish off with some leg presses for high reps. I've been doing sets of 20 and I do think that they have helped with quad/leg size a bit. I squat WIDE though...so maybe that is why.

It can't hurt you...but I wouldn't let them be my meat and potatoes.
