DO-NOT-BRING-ANYTHING-W-YOU!. . . Geeeezzz man. U should have cycled a few months ago, and gave it time to clear. U dont want a dd on your record. Congrats, and thanks for serving.

dam, what am i going to do with my cycle just sitting here? It will be bunk by the time I get out.

Pretty much what everyone here has said. Don't even think about bringing any gear with you. Would you bring cocaine? Pot? Exact same thing. Boot camp really isn't that hard. I went in Orlando in the summer of '88. You'll meet some good people and you'll meet some you wish you didn't. It's the same as life in general. One thing I learned was to always be under the radar. I never drew attention to myself and I'm not even sure if the CC's knew my name by the time I left. All in all, a great experience and I would do it all again.

rarely pt these days lol.
i went to navy bootcamp for 13 weeks in 1983 and we worked our asses off lol.

do not bring anything illegal to bootcamp , its not worth it.

Bootcamp has been shortened to 8-9 week (depending if you are a push division or not).

The average fail-rate for the PRT is around 45% for a rifle division and 2% for SpecWar divisions.

We spent A LOT of time sitting in from of our racks on "standby" studying... Which aperantly quite common. The material you study is beyond simple minded and takes maybe three hours to memorize, so naturally they give you two weeks.

I am not bashing the navy by any means!!!! I am just stating the facts. IMHO bootcamp needs to be made much more difficult, or at least something need to be brought back, (hard PT, Runs, Better discipline).

its all part of the politically correct , dont spank your kids just put them in time out generation.
its specifically designed to produce spoiled rotten pussies and its working well for them.

I Politics have failed= go to war...
I am all for politics, yet feel they should stay out of military training... For da** sake, beat me already!

Thanks for the imput guys.

Anyone have any opinion on what jobs in the navy that will benefit me after my service and become a civilian?

Yourtoy195 has given you solid info. I've been there, done that (recently)...and while I'd like to thank you for serving I'd rather give you some advice and have you consider other options besides the military. If you're somebody who wants to be controlled, and put thru the circus every minute of every day...then go for it.

I have friends still serving who are getting IOU's from the government now...they aren't even getting paid (which is a moot point I know, but I thought I'd mention it).

I won't get into my story on a public forum, but I don't know why you want to join the military. There are better options.

Also keep in mind the Navy is %300 over-manned right now and they are renegging on contracts left & right. Basically you're not going to get a job you like, hell you won't even get close.

I'm not anti-military by any means, I just want to be the guy to give you the other side of things. That's all. Honestly my military service sucked donkey dick...I didn't want to be controlled by dumbfucks...

I will put it to you as best I can. Imagine for a minute the one person on this planet who you despise more than anything (could be Obama, or Bush)...a puke, some good-for-nothing piece of shit from high school...seriously imagine this person. Now hand your life over to them and let them dictate everything that you will do.

In my opinion it's a no brainer, find something else. But who knows...at the end of the day it's all nostalgia to me. Make the right decision for yourself. That's all I advise.

It will be a LOT of bullshit though. Hurry up and wait amigo.

Surfbum, did it benefit you in any way after you served? Help you get a better job? Structure your life?

That's not an easy question to answer but I'd have to say no. I had some good times, meaningful times...but overall it was not a good decision. The Navy revels in Honor, Courage, and Commitment but you'll find none of that when you serve. Get used to having all of your stuff stolen. Theft is numero uno anywhere you go. Even in the SpecWar programs.

Guys snitch on each other all the time like the other guy above me was saying....it was just lame. If you're a resourceful person and you have a good head on your shoulders I would suggest looking for other opportunities outside the military. Certain trades pay a lot of money, have a solid network of great guys to work with, etc.

I'm not a cold-hearted anti-American by any means, so don't judge me that way by what I've written. Just consider that the Navy is 300% over-manned and you're not going to like where you end up.

The other unfortunate roadblock I've found in my post-military experience is that I've run into quite a bit of hiring discrimination due to my military background. Which is fucked up and un-American. Even though many companies receive healthy tax credits if they hire veterans...a lot of HR managers don't like military folks and believe me...it's a problem

These are just my experiences though. And like I said, don't get me wrong...if there was a threat to this nation I would be the first to run back in and re-enlist. Right now though you need to look out for yourself. Who knows what's going to happen in the next 10 years. My honest opinion is that the military may set you back. But feel free to check it out.

Good luck!

Please explain your opinion here, your experience may be different than mine. :)

From my experience, SpecWar has thiefs, and snitches, but that is almost SOLEY in the very early stages of training. They get filtered out by their peers very quickly...

During boot camp are we aloud to go lift weights? I dont know what i would do if I didnt get my daily lift in.
