Keep twisting my ankle

Its a Celebration Bitches
i rolled my ankle last summer, then found out it was classified as a moderate/severe sprain... as most ankle sprains are mine was on the lateral side of my foot... my right foot. Ended up almost tearing my "anterior talo-fibular ligament" and doing some damage to my "calcaneo-fibular ligament"..... for those who do not know those terms they are two ligaments that hold the fibula and control dorsal flexion.... since then i have twisted it the same way numerous times playing basketball, and jogging... but always just walked it off and dealt with it.

anyways... tonight i was joggin on the treadmill and it just hit me... i was doing nothing different... my ankle rolled forward and to the side and i fell right on it... all my weight... luckily i caught myself because the treadmill was still going 7-8 mph.

it probably looked funny to everyone else, and it would have been if it didnt hurt so goddamn much... i just put ice on it and its not looking good... its about the size of an orange and its darkish red color... it hurts to put weight on it.

The doctors office is closed until monday, so i called and left a message saying i would be there when they opened.... ill stay off it until then.

im seriously worried about it because i have read so much in my sports medicine class about different sprains, and i know that the more you sprain a ligament, depending on the severity, it stretches out and you become more and more prone to it for the rest of your life.

just wondering if anyone has heard of a certain therapy that i could strengthen my ankles with... or perhaps a certain kind of wrap or footwear that i could use to prevent this occurance.

i HATE walking around campus on crutches but i guess im going to have to break them out again.

BTW there is NO FUCKING WAY im going to give up sports i enjoy... there has to be some solution

perhaps you will need to start using an ankle brace or just tape up the foot. I had to do that while playing football, considering i was a fullback, and it sucked when you roll or sprain a foot, which i have done so many times

yeah i played defensive end for 2 years... its easy to roll your ankle playing/practicing

**update**

its been about 24 hours... swelling has gone down and its turned a dark purple color... it hurt more this morning.

ill be taking a few days off work to let things heal

RICE. Rehab. Brace.

I'm willing to bet that the doc didn't give you any rehab protocol the first X times you went in there, so the joint and musculature just got weaker thru rest and then never were strengthened to prevent recurrence after you got your ROM back, right? Get the doc to give you some exercises to strengthen the area (IF he knows what he's doing, which I doubt) and DO THEM.

i did my ankle in 3 weeks ago, first time since i tore everything 3 years prior.

the protocol i followed (following) is:

first few days was the RICE method
then hit up physio, they did some massage to move the swelling around and some ultra sound. (this week was all rice with a brace/wrap for walking)
week 2ish take the wrap off keep RICEing it and walk with an emphasis of HEEL to TOE on the ankle you sprained.

i started some wobble board work, standing 2 foot and then moving onto 1 foot. another exercise i did was tie a bet together and try and move the ankle outward (this depends on the way you sprained it). try to put in some calve raises

when you feel good and the swelling is down go for some light jog/walks on straight flat ground

i went back in week 3 to playing sports, and the swelling never went down, its braced well, but not fully healed. team needed me.

hope this info aint too late
