losing fat, gaining muscle on test cycle

Hi everyone.

I was wondering about the following:

To gain muscle, there has to be a surplus of calories.
To lose fat there has to be a shortage of calories.


My goal is to gain muscle while minimizing fat gains as much as possible. So what would happen if I eat maintanence calories or just a slight surplus ( say 100 calories ) instead of going the 500+ calorie route. Could I still gain muscle on my test cycle while losing bodyfat and increasing my LBM.
