Natural ways to relieve heartburn?

Have a friend who has a bad case of heartburn, and is trying to find natural ways to get rid of it. It happens after she eats any meal.

The best natural cure would be to reduce the size of the meals - keeping fat intake low would help aswell.
Fat stays in the stomach for alot longer than other macros, which isn't good if your friend has heartburn regularly.

Heartburn can also be alleviated by losing some weight if she's obese, cutting down on coffee & alcohol is also a good idea.
I was going to recommend an antacid or h2 antagonist medication but since she wants to use natural methods these won't suit her.

She should still see a doc if its a regular problem, just to make sure there's nothing serious going on behind it :)

I suffer from heartburn too, the shit sucks. She should definetely go see a doctor, if left untreated you can really damage the esophagus and it can raise the risk of esophagul cancer. I use Nexium, its a proton pump inhibitor and its awesome.

A lot of the time heartburn and indigestion is caused by too little stomach acid (hypochloridia) and antacids only make the matter worse. Tell her to start supplementing with betaine HCL with every meal, I do and I never get reflux or even hiccups - even stuffing food down every 2-3 hours.

great answers, she mentioned that she feels bloated after every meal and then the heartburn comes into effect.

is she eating gluten?? have her remove gluten from her diet.. completely.. if her heartburn goes away in 3-10 days she has a sensitivity to it..

i was under the impression i had celiacs disease for a long while thanks to my bodies reaction to gluten.. but after 4 blood tests i only come back with a weak positive on one of the three major deciding tests.. by definition i do not have celiacs disease.. yet gluten gives me horrible heart burn, horrible bloat, and lower gi problems

I suffered from serious heartburn and other gastric issues. Was on the usual stomach meds. Saw some info on D Limonene and gave it a shot. Worked wonders for me. And it's cheap and over the counter.

Also, have her go dairy free for a spell and see if it stops - lactose intolerance is very common and causes some of the same issues she is having.
