Beeeeeeelieve me, I'm not about to discount his lift, I was simply curious because I was told quad ply was not legal in competition but thats supposedly what he used for his 900 lift. I had heard a few months ago he was gunning for 1000, supposedly the big guy at my gym (Olympic shotputter) 'knows him.'

I agree on not maxing out every week, I did that for around 5 weeks and eventually it took a toll on me. Right now I am trying to recoup so I am going no heavier than about 4 reps and really trying to stay 6-8 until I really feel better.

apf and wpo you can wear as many plies as you want as long as they are sewed together as one piece. after a while though you get where you cant get squat depth or touch the bar to your chest on bench. most guys use dbl ply stuff. either denim, canvas or poly.

and i know you aint discounting it i was pickin a bit. :D

ok, question - i did a double wth 365 this evening and when i let go of the bar i felt the most intense pain in both my elbows, on the outside AND inside (like golfers and tennis elbow combined). it went away after 30 mins but i didnt feel up to dong any more work

something tells me i'll not be benching with the bar for a couple of weeks :(

what do you guys think about usng the hammer strength iso chest as a bench subsitute? dips and dbs are out because they'll need to be gripped hard but with the hammer i can use a looser grip & hopefully not make things worse

fuck.. just when things were going well too :p

my elbows used to give me probs so i changed my grip on squats and quit doin curls. within a cople of months I was a new man.

Pullin, do you have any secrets to getting the bar far on the back for squats, without hurting yourself? I have a hard time stretching to let the bar far back on my traps but I know I could squat more if I did so. I dont use a belt so I need every little bit of help. My back was so sweaty once I slipped and hurt my wrist pretty bad trying to do that crap.

low bar squattig puts more pressuer on the elbows so it may not be for you. there are very few low bar squatters who have a big bench. most big benchers high bar squat. one of my pards low bars and he lets the bar sit on top of his shoulder balde. there is a little ledge there once you bring you arms up. let me see if i got some footage of him. here ya go

as you cna see the bar sits on his delts and shoulder blades it fits purfect. and you see how he grips thew bar as well. he dont. this young man has the biggest bench ever by a 220 junior. he hit a 606.5 last spring. he does PLing and strong man he pulled 900lbs from his knees at his last strongman. squats over 8 and pulls close to 7. all at the age of 22. he trains around 240 then diets down for the meets. and i may add with out loosing strength. wpo has 48 hour weigh ins while apf has 24. he'll make weight day before and be 230 something day of the meet.

if you look at my squats you can see the difference in bar location. high bar makes you a little more upright. while low bar forces you foprward a bit but that takes work off you legs and makes for a shorter lever too. thats the advantage of low bar. he missed his squats because he was getting folded over so low bar is perfect for him. if i miss a squat i miss it at the bottom. i have never been folded over.

i have a groove worn in my trap where the bar sits. i can let go and it will sit there.

i'll also add that since he started low bar he now has elbow probs hindering his bench. here he is warming up.

Hmm, thanks much for the info. Basically I was looking for a way to boost my squat, I'm a bit tall like you (6'2") so I could use a little help without going to a half squat. Maybe I need to bite the bullet and do that though.

with squats :p using low bar & a narrow grip is what's killing my elbows, I have to put a lot of force on the bar to keep it in place on my heavy sets... when I do 10 reps+ I go oly style, hands right out and my elbows dont even twinge.

is it possible to go low-bar and have a more relaxed wider grip? seems like the bar would just roll down your back if you did that :(

I go wide grip all the time, didn't we talk about grip in this thread or another one? Right now I am going just about to the bottom of the rib cage. I brought in my grip a bit because of the pain (going ultra wide), I was putting my thumb (suicide grip) at the ring mark on the bar so even for me this was pretty wide. It was great for awhile but you put your pectorals at risk.

Doing narrow grip IMO should not cause any pain at all unless you are talking really narrow for triceps, and even then that is too narrow if it hurts you.

for benching my narrow grip work is pinkies on the rings. wide grip is index finger on the ring. the advantage to wide grip is tha tit shortens the stroke. just as a wide stance in squat or dead shortens the stroke.

another prob with low bar is that it makes hittin depth a bit tougher as the weight is more forward so you dont get as much downward force at the hips. in other words you have to force you self down.

open all the way but its not cutting edge ive had it about 3 years . i like experimenting with different stuff , ive got denim open back , poly open back , and that new titan closed/stretchy back . my first open back i cut myself but the poly ive had for about 3 years now was ordered that way . i hate closed back shirts , you cant breathe , they restrict your lats which hurts your bench , you cant adjust them up and down as the weight increases or your body weight changes and their to much work to get on and off . i just got the titan but my partner has had his a little over a month and hes put 25 pounds on his pr in it and i can get him in or out of it in less than 2 minutes without a struggle .
