Hi, well i got a question that's been lingering in my mind for months now and i would want to share it to you guys, i just want to know what you think.

You see i am in to mixed martial arts for only three months, i do boxing, muay thai and grappling, and i've been lifting for almost nine years now and i've done nothing but to bulk up and just simply get big. Right now i'm 5'10, 160lbs. and around less than 10% body fat, but before i only could get as low as 180lbs. and be as high as 190ish with probably 20%-30% body fat, hhhmmm well not really sure, i wasn't really that concerned before.

Anyways, now i'm lifting light weights with 30-50 reps, e.g. bench press 70lbs. 40reps 4sets, making me faster and lighter on my feet, so my question is if i would constantly keep my diet right now and would lift heavier weights with more or less still high reps, would this make me slower in my activities or would it still make me faster, lighter and stronger than before?

The reason that i'm asking is because i don't want to hurt myself experimenting, especially now that i've got an injury in my back, so this question is meant for all those who have experiences or has a knowledgeable background on this matter.

If you don't have anything good to say please don't post or reply on this thread, i am here seeking for a good and professional opinion.

thanks!:afro:

well you haven't gotten any feedback yet, but what i can say is i've read with higher weights and lower reps, you get more size, more bulk, bigger muscle, and with higher reps lower weight, you tend to get a lot more definition and not so much bulkieness, i'm prolly not completely correct, but I think your workout now with 40 reps sounds insane, i'd advise you to look at Speed and Agility workouts at some websites, they are really helpful for being more nimble and quick on your feet.....this is as much as i can do bro, good luck

I cant believe the old low reps for mass/high reps for cuts myth is still around. No offence but where in this day and age did you read that info?

Lifting heavy will NOT slow you down or make you muscle bound. These myths are from strength coaches in the 40's and 50's and have no place in todays world.

If you want to be faster, dont think heavy training will hurt. Hell look at sprinters they squat HUGE ASS weights and run like the wind.

Light weights are good too of course. I do alot of speed training in my WSB routines. Light weights, low reps, explosive movements for high sets. I do these D.E. days once a week.

But heavy stuff is the key bro.

for martial arts if you wanna put on size and remain agile and quick the answer is simple. you are half right in the way you train now. week 1 will heavy low rep training. week two will be high rep low weight week. sets of 50 is fine if you prefer those. make sure you stretch as much if not more than you currently stretch and continue the cardio. this heavy/light routine works well to develop muscle and target nerve excitation. the martial arts instructor at our gym wanted to bulk up but keep his speed and agility. i put him on this plan several months ago and it has worked beatifully. he has gained 20 pounds and is leaner as well. he did a lacal BBing show last may and won his first comp. he is doing another this may and is going to have to move up a weight class. he went from 180 to 200 at a height of 5'7". he is just as quick and a lot more powerful.
