Pre-Workout meal

question:

What have you found worked best for a pre-work out meal to boost energy before a 30-60 minute work-out?

Is it natural food or supplements?

just curious

thanks,

I find a whey shake and oats is easy on my stomach.. not too heavy..usually a lil over an hour or so before my workout.

I usually have a serving of oatmeal and a small portion of protein about 1-1/2 hours before I train.

i like muscle milk by cytosport pre work out. and i usually wash it down with charge w/ephedrine ( eca ) to get me going.

Used to be I'd have a meal or even just a shake about an hour or so before my workout. Switched to an early morning (5am) workout so I go in with nothing but a cup of coffee in my belly. No problems with energy whatsoever, but believe me, I'm soooooo ready for that post workout shake when I'm done. Then a full meal about an hour or so later. I'm good to go.

rubberducky.... what are you doing for a morning workout? if your lifting weights it is a MUST to have something preworkout.
or is it just cardio?

Jen, what would you suggest? If I'm in the gym at 5 how am I supposed to get in a pre-workout meal? I typically get out of bed, have a cup of coffee and go. If I had a shake I know I'd puke (sorry to be so graphic) on some of my lifts. I have to be back and get ready for work by 7am so simply getting up earlier is not an option as I work until 6pm.

hmm well if your weight training first thing in the morning you defintly need something before you hit the weights. cortisol levels are very high upon wakening, leaving you at a higher risk of catabolism. Perhaps stick to cardio first thing in the morning, and is it possible to do weights in the evenings rather? you can cut back the amount of days that your lifting, from 5 to 4, or even 3 is needed. being natural, you dont want to risk overtraining..
if it was a must to weight train in the morning then set your alarm 1 hour before you would normally get up, have a shake with a peice of fruit, back to bed for the other hour then off to the gym. (hoping you can easily get back to sleep).

LOL! Actually it is a must that I train that early. I have tried the getting up and having something. Can never get back to sleep. I end up sleep deprived and exhausted. I do try to compensate and make sure I have a high quality protein about an hour before bed. I find this helps. Some would say that's eating too close to bed time. My view is that your muscles are recovering and growing while sleeping so a little fuel won't hurt. Never had a problem with it ie: fat retention.

I ALWAYS eat right before bed, 30-45 minutes prior to bed. typially proteins and fats though, no carbs. never lead to fat gains for me either. IMO it is a must, cutting or bulking. your muscles are repairing while you sleep, higher levels of GH during the night...this is when you grow. one does not grow in the gym, rather out of the gym during rest.
but my main worry is that this meal even before bed is not going to be in your system long enough to suffice for the next mornings workout. you really need something before weights, I cant stress this enough. maybe you could get someone to hit you over the head and knock you out for the other hour! lol
on a serious note however, how late do you go to bed? is it possible to turn in early so you dont get sleep deprived?
I know when Im cutting and up at 4:30-5:30 for a cardio session I was in bed by 8-8:30 most nights.

I always eat before bed as well. If I don't, I wake up at three in the morning just starving.
Now, in terms of you training on an empty stomach, I would try to take something in hun. I know getting up earlier is not an option for you so how about eating a little something on the way to the gym, like a couple of hard boiled eggs and a piece of fruit. At least it's giving you something in your stomach.

I'll try it and let you know how I make out. I always find I get nauseous if I eat too soon before I work out.

Worth a try though. I'll let ya know. :)

Yah, I do too but I'm worried that your not giving yourself anything at all. So, even if it's only something little, at least it's something.:)

give it a try rubberducky! I cant stress this enough. I know how tuff it is to try to lift sometimes if the food hasnt settled enough. You dont want anything to big so that the digestion interfers with oxygen output during lifting.

Here's a thought. Sweets always has a tablespoon of natty peanut butter on the way out the door to the gym. Would that suffice as a pre-workout meal? I think I could manage that without getting too nauseous.
