Pull Overs???

I have seen people do bb pullovers and wanted to know what they work? Some do them on chest day, others on back day. What is best? What is the benefit of doing them? Will they add size to chest or width to back?

The pullover machine usually says it works your lats and from a mechanical standpoint that seems what makes the most sense. But, I do usually feel like I’m getting a good stretch in my pecs while I do them. When doing pullovers with free weights I think that it works the lats to a less extent because when you get the bar strait overhead the resistance on your lats stops whereas with the machine you bring the bar all the way down to your waist. Pullovers give your chest a good stretch, which would be beneficial to your chest routine, but it’s not a movement that puts a lot of tension on your pecs.

If you are young and still growing they have the most effect in that they expand your ribcage. Otherwise they work lats and triceps primarily.

how do they expand your ribcage?

If you are still young and your bones are still growing then pullovers stretch the cartilage of the sternum and ribcage. Bodybuilders in the 50's swore by them and many of them had large ribcage structure. They usually credited pullovers for their expanded ribcages. Another good substitute are Rader chest pulls-you don't need dumbells.

it hits mostly your shoulders, triceps upper abs, triceps, chests, lats and serratus. I'm not sure about the whole being useless part...it really depends..

honestly bro, even if they did stretch the cartilage, you would only get a mm difference at the max
