Shoulder surgery..post op

I have impingements in each shoulder as well. I decided to train around it. I went through some major bouts of pain as my delts swelled with the new mass I was adding but in time the bones actually began to separate and while today it is still not optimal, I am not in pain like I was and I am a hell of alot bigger than I was.
I have impingement as well. Took loads of Ibuprofen and it controlled the inflammation that caused the pain. I am now on Naproxen and they feel great. Will be getting a blood test to check liver values soon to see if the Naproxen is fucking me up.

re naproxen: it's more likely to eat a hole in your stomach before it dicks with your liver. i've used the stuff on/off again for the last 12 years.

I had a torn labrum that caused my shoulder to pop out and then pop back in when I was doing things like tucking in the back of my shirt. I had surgery where he reattached it (sewed?I guess) and it was fucked up for a LONG time.
After a couple of years I can lift without any real problems though I still cant sleep on that side without waking up in pain . Plus I can't throw worth shit anymore and it hurts when I do. The Doc said that surgery brings on arthritic problems that were there though not noticable. One of the weird things was that my arm changed shape after and not just smaller in size.Years later my tricep isn't as developed (round) and I gained size (fat?) near the bottom inside of my arm near the forearm . Anyone else ever have something like that?

I'm on Prilosec too and have never had any stomach discomfort...knock on wood.

ART seems like some form of cult. They keep their "secrets" close held, so one can read/research shit on the techniques. "500 patented exercises and moves unique to ART."

Where does one find an ART-cult practitioner? And can you give examples of ART, or are you sworn to secrecy?

The anchor used in the labrum repair is still titanium. It goes into the scapula not the humerus. There's a loop on the top of the anchor and the suture is put through that and around the bit of torn labrum to hold it down so it can reattach. The doctor will cut away any loose bits of labrum first. I think they also perform a procedure to tighten up the muscles of the rotator cuff to make the joint tight again, especially if you've told your doctor you want to get back to training.

The recovery is tough. Very frustrating if you're used to training very regularly. I'm about 6 months down the track now and training again although not up to my pre-surgery levels. I can't through a ball properly, much less a decent punch. I can only hope it will all come good in the next 6 months.

Try this link for a neat video of the surgery and access to a pretty good site about shoulder ops.

Thanks for the video, although I really shouldn't watch it as tomorrow morning is the day !!

I think...... that the way my Dr was going to do this does away with the Titanium anchor, he told me the "plug" is actually a portion of the stitch that will dissolve anyway. I understood this was a fairly new way to do it, to get away from the Titanium. I will ask him in the morning.

Someone asked above how I lucked into the Dr for the 2 Pro teams here, It really was just that...luck I went to my normal Ortho Dr and he did not want to mess with it and referred me to this Dr, and luck have it he was on my insurance... Last time I was in there Patrick Ewing was in the waiting room.

Good luck with it.

I had my left shoulder completly re-done. It was done in Feb. by August I was on the football field. I also did a cycle in between to help speed up the recovery process. I did test, and d-bol. All worked out !

Ive had both shoulders done.I had bone spurs that had torn holes in the middle deltoid tendon.Last year I had one done and this Jan I had the other one done.Last years was open,I pray that I never have to go throught that again. So I found a diffrent doc
who specializes only on shoulders and hands. This time it was done arthroscopic.I started lifting again after eight weeks, light weights. And after three months now im benching up to 165 pounds very comfortable. And the scar can hardly be noticed, unlike the open surgery scar. That surgery took me over 7 months to get where I am now.

What was your injury and what kind of surgery did you have done?

I had to have a acromion recessions peformed on both shoulders. That means that The Doctor had to enter the shoulder by cutting a two inch cut on it through one of the deltoid muscles to get to the hole and tendon that was partually detached.Caused by the bone spur. Then grind down the bone spur, and then sew up the hole on the middle deltoid Tendon, then reatach it to the bone where it belongs using little screws that will disolve after 9 months or so.After surgery the pain was a bitch,Ive had hernia repair and I would rather have six hernia repairs compaired to this kind of surgery.
This past April I had the other shoulder done. But I found a Doctor that specializes just on hands and Shoulders.Had it done arthroscopic,No where near the pain. And the healing time is faster(on the outside)And the scar is hardly noticeable. My advice is to find a GOOD doctor, and after surgery give it time to heal, and when you do go back to the gym take it slow. Hope this helps some Melbourne

Its too late for me mate, I've already had mine done!

I know about the op you're referring to. Its different to the one I had and hat the other fella here is having. As for your surgery, I heard that having an op done arthroscopically does not necessarily mean it will be better or easier to get over. When the doctor opens you up, as he did in your first op, he's able to do a better stitching job on the tear, then when he is confined by working through a keyhole. Mind you, the difference is not great, especially when you've got a good surgeon. Good luck with your next one. Getting someone who specializes is always a good start.

Shoulder surgery does hurt a bit though.

Mine is paining like a bitch today !

Lots of good info on this one, I had mine done on Tuesday and thought it was no big deal due to the nerve block, once that wore off........OUCH !

I spoke with my Dr prior to the surgery about anchor placement and his take was either Humerous or Scapula dependant upon where the tear was closes to, mine ended up on the Humerous.

Long recovery road ahead.

i have a frayed labrium in my right shoulder... supposed to have had surgery for about 3 years now... old hockey injury... kept putting it off and started gassing about 2 years ago now and it hasn't really bothered me since... but take lots of time man, i have buddys that had it done... one came back too early fucked it up even worse than it was before... taker easy and let it heal then start back slowly
gl man

Good luck with your recovery.

I loved the arm block. I know its a bit hard trying to sleep with that stupid brace on.

I went nuts not being able to train. You can walk a lot and in about a month you'll be able to start doing abs.

Gives you a chance to catch up on your reading.
