A Lenox man was arrested on drug charges Tuesday after state police said they seized more than $100,000 worth of anabolic steroids from his home.

Joseph "Ty" Tornatore, 27, of 3186 Seneca Ave., was charged with 22 counts of fifth-degree possession of a controlled substance, a felony, troopers said. He was also cited on misdemeanor charges of possessing hypodermic needles and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Police said Tornatore imported the drugs from China and northern Europe and resold them at an enormous profit at various health clubs. He did business in Oneida County, mainly the New Hartford area, "and possibly in Syracuse," Trooper Eric Jones said.

Police executed a search warrant at Tornatore's home and at 918 Mary St. in Utica after a three-month investigation.

They seized more than 11,000 doses of steroids, 400 hypodermic needles for injecting them, more than $15,000 in cash, and a folding dagger that was in Tornatore's car, troopers said.

Many of the drugs seized are commonly used by veterinarians to treat animal illnesses, especially horse diseases. The types of steroids seized include methandrostenolone, stanozolol and anastrozole, troopers said.

Tornatore is a bodybuilder, Jones said.

Tornatore was arraigned in Utica City Court and sent to the Oneida County jail before being released on $3,000 cash bail just after 5 p.m., Undersheriff M. Peter Paravati said.

Reached at his home Tuesday, Tornatore declined to comment on the charges against him.

He did say that he used to work out in gyms throughout Madison and Oneida counties, and trained for bodybuilding contests but never competed.

The investigation is continuing, police said.

How does something start in a case like this? I mean, I know several people who sell juice in the gym and nobody cares. They even sell to policemen. It probably starts in customs, but after that do they try and set him up? Or can they just let stuff through and get a warrant to listen to phone conversations? I am just wondering because a three month investigation isn't long.....what do they do during those 3 months? If someone that knows (for sure) can help it would help anyone who buys feel safer.

...and here I am thinking STATE TROOPERS' only job was to stop speeding motor vehicles, stupid me...

Of course there was a damn snitch involved, which makes the lives of people (like me) who will one day need to find a supplier for their stuff - THIS SUCKS.

Im no law major, but doesnt "criminal possesion" mean he has been convicted before?
Not to mention carying a weapon wioth the gear.....WHAT A MORON!!!!!!

Per US Federal law, there are 2 ways of being charged w/ criminal possession:

1. Owning, using, firing, touching, etc etc etc any firearm (arms which propels a projectile) after being convicted of a felony offense.

2. Owning or having in your possession, a firearm at the time of commiting a (felony) criminal offense.

# 2 would certainly apply in this case.

11000 doses huh? and they said dbol was one of the things seized. bet they charged each pill as a dose. guy probably had a couple bottles, and like 8000 dbol pills. net worth of maybe 6 grand.

Looks like I misread when I was replying...

Yes, what I said is true in case it's a firearm... but in that post it says "dagger" - well, a dagger is a knife.

I some states, knives over a certain length are considered illegal if you don't have a permit. Or illegal if it's concealed.

In NC (my state), if your blade is over 6 inches, it can't be concealed without a concealed weapons permit. It must be worn on the outside of the clothes, visibly.

***If it's a gun, refer to my earlier post - for knives, this is the deal.

Unfortunately for him, the investigators always will intensify things for the media. They want to sound like "BIG COPS"... The guy pays the price, but there are 2 things that worked in his favor...

- His bond amount was low as fuck.
- If they caught him with what we know as 11000 (real) doses, he would still be in jail..! Either no-bond or a very high one.

- Of course we're glad he's home (or at least OUT)

The investigation is continuing because these dumb fucks don't know that anastrozole is not a steroid....

That shit is pretty funny, when cops report to the media it is always exaggerated. For instance they grab 400 dbols off a guy coming out of a gym and reporst it as "Steroid Ring Bust," making it sound like they shut down the worlds biggest steroid ring. Infact anything with the government is the same way. Ever notice that a "slight tax increase" costs you $300, while a DRAMATIC TAX CUT saves you $0.25"

You know he isnt in any big trouble cause $3K bail is nothing. All he has to do it put up $300 to get out. When i got charged with a petty midemeanor of Disorderly Conduct (which is actually supposed to be a ticketed offence) my bail was $900.

Anyway it is still sad to see someone go down like that, but i doubt that he is going to get any jail time. Probably a fine and some probation if he gets a half decent lawyer.

fucking troopers

I agree 100% with you, however cops are paid to uphold and enforce the law. The law says that this is illegal activity therefore tehy must enforce the law. Also doing shit like this is how Cops make thier living, the state actually makes money off of court cases considering the bail fees, processing fees, fines, and court fees that go along with this type of case. I agree it should not be thier number 1 priroity, but if they happen to get tipped off or something, then forsure it is thier duty to follow through with an investigation. It is not like NYC crime rate jumped dramatically because they spent all thier man power on this case. The guy was probably sloppy in what he did, and that is why he eventually got busted, or he may just have had bad luck.
