Syringe filter membrane - which do you prefer?

I would avoid hand pumps if possible when using a vacuum filtration system. They're more of a pain than anything. A continuous vacuum will make life easier and provide a nice seal around your filter. I use a filtering flask and a Buchner funnel as my filtering system.

Disturb, would a hand pump work with a polycap instead of the pricey electric vacuum pumps?

I would strongly recommend opting for the pump. You may be able to find a cheaper one on ebay. Hand pumps just do not get the job done well.
