Tapered V Look

I should have probably have posted this in the training section but I thought I would get a little more response here. I was reading an article in one of the muscle magazines about how the look many guys are trying to achieve now is a very tapered V shape from shoulders to waist and that in order to do that some were avoiding doing a lot of squats and deadlifts that tend to thicken up the midsection.

I know my midsection has thickened some from doing a lot of squats, leg presses and deadlifts. Part of the reason I've worked my legs hard with heavy weights was because I understood that doing so stimulated overall muscle growth and actually helped stimulate upper body growth as well. So are there any training strategies to still work out legs that avoid thickening the midsection in order to keep the waist as small as possible--or is it not worth being concerned with? Opinions?

Do a pre-exhaust set of leg extensions and without rest run over to the hack squat machine. Problem solved.

They will thicken your waist up a bit but not that much. I deadlift 500lbs for sets of 10 (with a video around here somewhere) and squat 450+ for reps, with no belt, and stepped on stage a few weeks ago with a waist under 30"

Fuck chick, that is the article you are referring to. Needsize is a perfect example of why you should squat and deadlift, it probably has something to do with his great abs, thick back and thick legs.

thanks I attribute all of that to heavy squats and deads

jocktheglide, my bench is nothing special, I'm all lower body power, best I've ever done is a few sets of 5 reps on 335lbs

taper

if your worried about a taper , work on those delts , wide enough shoulders will give a tapered look to a less than perfect waist

im 5'5" my waist right now is 30" at 15% BF, im going to diet down to 9% BF, so i wonder how small my waist would be, anyway, i squat, deadlift, for 1.5 years now never thickened my waist i dont think

I focus alot on chins and side delt laterals, and my "V" has developed nicely.Of course you need to keep your waist small also.

yeah, i read alot about how people at first try to work their obliques to get that shape, but its mostly your shoulders... ive concentrated more on shoulders recently and it makes my waist seem smaller, even though its not, so it should look good when my waist does get smaller :)

Cyus your BF level is lower than that! when I was on gear I had a 32inch waist and my Doc told me I had a 8% BF I was getting checked up on my BF 6 months before gear and the highest I got was 13% BF with a 34inch waist. Im 5'6" myself so we are the same.

Perfect V Taper....Work on Medial Delts, Upper Lats, Do not get your lower lats wide...it will take away from your small waist.....Quad Sweep...

Best Movements

Lots of Lateral Raises
Pulldowns/Chins
Hack Squats

What he said. Lats and shoulders are the biggies. If you do gear, shoot it in the delts for a cycle, thats what I did and my shoulders exploded outward.
