what does Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) do, hormonally?

what does HCG do, hormonally?

I know that HCG prevents testicular atrophy, but what does it really do, not physically but hormonally? I physically can see the difference, but what does preventing atrophy do inside my body? Hope my question is clear enough to understand.
