Is this technique best for lifting the max amount of poundage? I ask because I like to push through my heels because I feel it more in my glutes, but how much weight I put up isn't really an issue for me.

depends on your style and stance..
pushing through your heels is gonna make your butt come up first which leads to getting bent over..nothing wrong with that..Goggins squats that way with a lot of back..
personally i squat much wider and use more glutes/hips.."spreading the floor" allows you to stay more upright and slide the hips through faster..
