23 - Low T - Worried about hair loss

So my hair has been thinning a little bit for a few years and doctors say I have very mild mpb.

The thing is I have low T too.

Range: [300-1000]

That's total t, haven't done the specifics yet as my gp refered me to a urologist first to make sure physically I'm okay.

What can I do? I'm half tempted not to start TRT as I like my hair even though I'm losing it. I have crohns too, so I like that I can at least have control of my looks, but this low T is a huge blow too. The other half says to fix the low T because I have ed, man boobs, belly, and little muscle mass anymore.

Seems nothing is going my way.

If you are already losing your hair then doing TRT or not is not going to change the fact that you are losing your hair.

It's very very slow right now. In fact only I notice it and doctors who also agree it's not too bad at all. Hairline is good but top is thinning all over.

I've read injections are better for those concerned with hairloss rather than gel. Is this true?

First off, I am sorry you are losing your hair, I do not think I will ever have that issue and am very lucky in that respect. I know there are products available on the market that can help with the issue of thinning hair I am just not familiar with them. I think the dosage of test given in a TRT dose is low enough that it should not cause any hair loss issues, I know there are other anabilics that are more known for causing hair loss than Test but I could be wrong.

If you need any advice on TRT this is a great forum and there are some very knowledgable guys like Megatron, Halfwit and Austinite that can provide you with some great information so that you can make the ideal decision for yourself.

Best of luck to you!

I think you have lost all touch with what is important. Are you really going to put your vanity before your health?

Well to be fair everyone on this site cares about how they look.

That's not fair actually. Every guy here who is on TRT cares about his health first. I just don't know how anyone could be so vain.

The Prestige: "Doc, I can't let you shave my hair."

Doctor: "We have to if we are going to remove that brain tumor."

The Prestige: "Nope. I need my hair to pick up girls."

Doctor: "But your penis doesn't work. What are you going to do with them? This brain tumor is more advanced than we suspected."

The answer is simple: Make love to that hair. Duh! :wiggle:

OP: Bald vs. morbidly obese/diabetic/anxious/limp/mentally dulled. You decide.

I never did get the whole hair pride thing. I have naturally very thick and curly hair, yet I shave my head. Who needs a sweat sponge on their noggin?

What can I do? I'm half tempted not to start testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) as I like my hair even though I'm losing it. I'm in the same boat as you - I'm 22, turning 23 in a couple months - and my hair on the top of my head has been thinning out for years now, long before I realized that I had Low T. I'd say start testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), its a lot more important than having hair on your head, there are a lot more options for replacing your hair than having low T.

I get what you're saying, but you gotta understand I already have crohns. Lifting and my appearance are the only things I can control anymore. It's something I can take pride in. My health will never be in my control ever again.

TRT is taking control of your health. You can have the TT levels of an 80 year old man or take control and choose to do something about it.

Here's the deal with hair. If you are going to lose it, you are going to lose it. Taking exogenous test may speed up the process. It may not. Either way, you are going to lose it if you have male pattern baldness. If you are already having to comb your hair differently at age 23 you are probably on your way to losing it. Just go get the Jason Statham haircut and move on with life. The best way to hide that you are losing your hair is to cut it very short.

And try those DHT shampoos. They are supposed to help.

I have no problem losing my hair, I have a problem losing my hair at 23.

Is it true the shots have less conversion of dht compared to the gels?

OP, you have Crohn's, something I know all to much about. If you have ever had to take the "other" steroids (Prednisone, etc), your bone density may be compromised, and significantly so. Mine was and that is one of the reasons my urologist recommended testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) for me. It stimulates bone growth in men with low T (Effect of testosterone treatment on ... [J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 1999] - PubMed - NCBI).
If you are active and want to enjoy life as you age, consider how the loss of bone mass leading to osteoporosis and brittle bones will impact the quality of your life and attractiveness to which ever gender you favor.
Beyond that, I get your concern. You are a young man facing a significant medical issue. You have Crohn's and have had to deal with that as well. I suspect that you have done what is necessary to address that scourge, weighing the risks and benefits of treatment options. Do the same with hypogonadism and you may find that the potential risk of hair loss pales in comparison to the benefits of stabilizing your endocrine system and all the good that will come from that.
Best of luck.

HAH! I'm not that old. ;) I was mistaken for a little girl in my youth though (pre-pubescence) as I had very curly locks. I think that's why I have kept it short since then. AHHHHH PSYCHOLOGICAL TRAUMA - that must be why I have facial hair and shave my head!

Well said Sedg1. :)
