AAS causing blood clots?

How would Anabolic Androgenic Steroids (AAS) use lead to blood clots forming in the legs that were so severe both legs would end up being amputated?

Did anyone else see that story on Sportscenter late lastnight that was about the guy who is now 57 years old, and was once a boxer back in the late 60's early 70's? After he got his ass kicked by George Foreman he decided he was too skinny and wanted to start AAS. He began with Dbol, and later added Deca. He didnt say whether he cycled or not, but he did state that he was using for years and years. Around the mid 70's he developed blood clots in his legs which was caused by the Anabolic Androgenic Steroids (AAS) he was told. Eventually it got so bad both legs were amputated. Now he tours the USA talking to highschool kids about the dangers of AAS.

Anyone have any ideas why this happened? Maybe an abcess at the injection sites? Could his cholesterol, ect... gotten so bad that he developed clots?

Thanks fellas.

While on gear, there is often an increase in red blood cell count and hemoglobin. I'm not sure if this is related, but I thought I would throw it out there.

His health (cholesterol, ect...) must have been pretty bad for quite some time for it to get that extreme, and he just was ignoring it or didnt realize it. I doubt he was getting regular blood work done or talking to a doctor about his use.

Has anyone else ever heard of something like this before being caused by AAS?

Thanks fellas.

I've heard from a family member of a steroid user who got blood clots in his legs and both had to be amputated. This was a long time ago.

excess androgens in your blood can imbalance your thrombin:antithrombin ratio in favor of thrombin. this is one of your body's clotting factors.
This actually happened to me twice. :bawling: both times it was from 1-test. last summer i was on a 1ad/4ad cycle when i got my first clot. it hurt like a mother fucker, swollen, red, and hot. I had to get injections of lovinox into my abdomen to thin out my blood in a hurry. 9 months later I was on a cycle of M1T and it happened again but in the other leg. the doc's said the androgens i was using cuased my blood to clot more easily due to the offset of thrombin:antithrombin. now i take an 81mg aspirin everyday and fish oil to keep my blood healthy. seems to be working just fine. :wink2:

Is that enough aspirin? Doesnt seem like it. I take about 650mg everyday.

What other things along with aspirin could someone add to this mix to help prevent this?

Thanks again guys.

policosanol

81mg is the dose reccomended by cardiologists for patients who have had or are candidates for heart attacks, strokes, etc... trust me its enough. if i cut myself shaving i bleed for hours. too much aspirin can give you ulcers long term. also foods that are rich in vitamin K will thicken your blood.

Yes, I've read about research that indicated a little bit of aspirin can do good things, but too much asprin is often worse than no aspirin at all.
