Anyone with Highland Games Experience?

Noxious

Unsung Hero
Hi there,

I'm 18 and I've been throwing for highland games for about 2 years now,but I'm not very good. I need to increase my strength a great deal (which i'm working on currently).
I'm looking to increase my distances, and looking for some tips for winter training. I already lift 4-5 times a week, and I'm just looking for some event-specific exercises.

What are the Highland Games? Why the sudden change of not being very good?

Oh come on,you know,highland games....haha

Caber Toss,Stone throw,hammer,etc.

Not that I'm suddenly not very good, was never great, never put tons of time into it. This year I'm looking at improving and taking things a lot more serious.

I would imagine that the most beneficial exercizes one can do in the weight room to train for the games would have to be the big three. Bench, Deads, and Squats. Every event requires overall strength and there's no better way to build that than hittin' the big three.

Maybe, it would be good to throw in some kind of explosive shoulder exercize to train for the throwing events, clean and press perhaps?

Though, I am sure you can't go wrong with the core exercizes .

try this.. go to the cable station at your gym, put on any piece you want, rope, handle, nothing but the ball itself etc. go through the motions you would in your competition and use a moderate weight, your body should build more strength at that specific motion... baseballs players at my old gym use to a similar exercise except they used the rope and swung it like a bat... and dont forget to do the basics..deads bench squats as HR said
