MILWAUKEE - (KRT) - The Bush administration on Thursday announced a major drive to halt the sales of andro, a popular dietary supplement its proponents say can build muscle.
Andro, marketed under names like Endo-Stak, Andro Fuel and Anabolic Power Stak, is best known as the substance used by former major-league slugger Mark McGwire in 1998 when he hit a then record-setting 70 home runs.
As part of the crackdown, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Thursday that it had sent out warning letters to 23 companies asking them to stop distributing products sold as dietary supplements that contain androstenedione, the formal name of the substance.
In effect, the government told the firms that they must stop selling the product unless they can prove that it's not dangerous to consume.
The International Olympic Committee, the National Football League and the NCAA all have banned andro. A spokesman for Major League Baseball, which has not banned the substance, issued a statement Thursday saying baseball supported the federal government's action.
At a news conference Thursday in Washington, Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson said young people, athletes and consumers should stay away from andro because of concerns about their safety.
"Young people should understand that there are no shortcuts to a stronger body and that the best way to get faster and stronger is through good diet, nutrition and exercise," Thompson said.
The andro announcement came just a day after U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and other senators criticized baseball, especially its players' association, for not having a stronger drug-testing policy.
Next month, the federal government will officially ban ephedra, an herbal stimulant that is used to lose weight. The stimulant has been linked to the deaths of more than 150 people, including Baltimore Orioles pitcher Steve Bechler. However, a company that produces the stimulant is seeking federal court action to halt the ban.
FDA Commissioner Mark B. McClellan said that, although andro might provide short-term benefits, "the science shows that these same properties create real and significant health risks."
"While the products are advertised to athletes, they have the potential to get into the hands of our impressionable youth who may believe these products will help their development," McClellan said. "Anyone who takes these products in sufficient quantities to build muscle or improve performance is putting himself or herself at risk for serious long-term and potentially irreversible health consequnces."
Andro is not technically an anabolic steroid, but is known as a steroid precursor or a pro-hormone. A steroid precursor produces hormones, including testosterone. Anabolic steroids cannot be dispensed without a prescription.
According to the FDA, scientific evidence shows that when andro is taken over time and in sufficient quantities, it might increase the risk of serious and life-threatening illnesses.
Potential long-term consequences include testicular atrophy, impotence and the development of female characteristics such as breast enlargement. Women who use the product may develop male characteristics, such as male-pattern baldness, deepening of the voice and increased facial hair.
James Riggs, president of Schwartz Laboratories in Cincinnati, which manufacturers the product under the names Anabolic Power Stak and Sublingual Anabolic Express, criticized the federal government's action. And he predicted that the products would come back and would be regulated by the FDA with one key difference.
"They will cost a lot more," he said.
Riggs said he thought pro-hormones were safe to use, but said young people should not take them because their bodies are still developing. A federal survey determined that about one out of 40 high school seniors reported using andro in the past year. The survey, conducted by Health and Human Services' National Institute on Drug Abuse, also found that about one out of every 50 10th graders had taken andro in the previous year.
Thompson also threw the Bush administration's support behind legislation sponsored by U.S. Sens. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Joseph Biden (D-Del.), and U.S. Reps. F. James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.), John Sweeney (R-N.Y.) and John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.), that would classify andro-containing products as a controlled substance. If passed by Congress, the legislation would give the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency the right to regulate the substances as anabolic steroids.

I wonder what effect this will have on M1T. No mention of other products in the article.
