Best for thickening back width but not waist ?

BTW I really wouldn't be concerned about thickening your waist. I know the pro's look like shit with their tree-trunk wastes, but that probably has more to do with substance abuse than any heavy lifting. Just look at guys like Franco who could dead 700+ yet has a waist like a 13 year old girl.

Yep. Man up and lift the weights. Do not fear a tree trunk core.
 
v-taper is genetics and diet.

In all honesty ---the benefits from deadlift variations are great and I wouldnt be worried about "thickening" of the wiast.

BUt for back thickness --rotate rack deads\floor deads\old school t-bar rows\bb rows\hammer stength rows\chest supported rows...
