Can protein loose potency???

Lately I have been making my protein shake before bed and put it in the fridge in my bedroom so I can drink it first thing when I wake up.

Has any one heard of protein loosing its potency if it sits overnight?

I would not mix your protein until your ready to use it. There can be degradation of protein which starts right away.

lets put it another way also - What advantages are there to mixing it before hand. It takes all of 30 seconds to mix your shake, so why even take the chance of your protein degrading even 5??

That's true, although like I said above I think it would be ok as long as it was refrigerated. But really it shouldn't be a big deal to take 30 seconds to mix it right then and there.

I don't 30 extra seconds is a lot of time to invest.

Just kidding, the reason is that I make a shake that I drink before bed so I figured I might as well make both shakes and not have to clean the blender twice and I'm usually don't go downstairs until I am ready to leave for work.

Why would you have to use your blender for a shake? What else are you putting into your protein?

if doing this is fine... im thinking of mixing some of my 50lbs of whey into my cooled 5gal water cooler and having protein shake on tap for 3 days at a time.

It mixes a little better and thats just the way I have been doing it for about ten years

First i would not recommend anything other then whey isolate (high quality) - if you do this you will never need to use anything other then a few shakes of your cup or stirs of the spoon.

Don't get caught up in this marketing crap that you need different protein shakes. Ex: Night time protein or postworkout protein.

Forget that crap and just use isolate - its higher quality, you'll utilize it better. And the idea that it digest to fast is false. only people saying that is the supplement companys.

Also mixing 5 gal of whey is a horrible idea.

That would be nice. But I've found that even with protein that I mixed up 15 minutes prior, it starts to settle at the bottom. Just a quick shake and it is fine, but a quick shake is kind of difficult with a 5 gal cooler. Maybe if the cooloer was a special one that refrigerated and gently agitated the liquid though....
