Can some one explain EXACTLY how to do a deadlift, I'd really like to be benefiting from their intense workout factor too.

I see people doing them different all the time, and it gets confusing, I don't know if they are deadlifting anymore or upright rowing or what. which way is correct and what impact do diff positions have?

I love deadlifts, and know that they are key in mass building and weight gain. But recently injured my lower back doing deads and now can't pound the weight I need to. I always seem to get that pinch strain in the lowerback using the bar which kills for 5 days after the w/o and thus kills other heavy workouts.

However, i've started to deadlift with dumbbells pulls right at my side instead of the bar in front. I find it easier to keep the lift (or center of gravity) behind my shoulders and over my feet. I feel it protects the lower back from the "whoops lean forward" mistake and still lets me lift heavy heavy yet still isolate the mid and lower center back. Yes you need to use bigtime dbs if you have a gym that goes higher than the typical 120s which mine does.

Opinions?
