I think we've all heard that. But is it true? I've been on 150mg/wk for over a year. With that dose, my 10ml vial lasts me about 12 weeks. I use a clean needle each time I draw from the vial, and I wipe the top of the vial with alcohol each time, and keep the vial covered in a dry cool place. I've never had a problem with it going bad.
The preservatives that keep the product sterile are volatile and don't last forever. The chances of bacterial contamination increase with time along with other factors. 28 days is the (probably conservative) expiry set for multiple use injectables by the USP.
It doesn't go bad but since the debacle in 2013 with the cortisol steroids from a small compounding pharmacy in the upper east coast giving a bunch of people meningitis the FDA and congress are cracking down on all sterile injectable multi-dose vials.
Basically they are saying they do not want any sterile injectable multi-dose vials to be used longer than 28 days.
So pharmacies are no longer suppose to dispense over a 4ml vial.
It's an insurance issue. Once I made sure my pharmacy knew I pay out of pocket for my test, I'm back to 10ml vials. Testosterone can last YEARS if kept in a cool dry location out of direct light.
I agree that the compounding incident did make way for folks to market 1ml vials as the cost to milliliter ratio is much higher.
