The U.S. Military's Discriminatory Policy: "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"

The "Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Don't Pursue, Don't Harass" policy is a practical ban on gay men, lesbians and bisexuals serving in the military — similar to the policies banning service by such individuals that have been in place for the past fifty years. "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" is the only law in this country that authorizes the firing of an American simply for coming out as gay, lesbian, or bisexual. Some Americans view the policy as a benign gentlemen’s agreement, with discretion providing the key to job security.

But "discretion" is not a fail-safe mechanism. An honest statement by a servicemember of his or her sexual orientation to anyone, anywhere, anytime may lead to discharge from the armed services. Moreover, is discretion in the form of mandated silence is itself a form of oppression and discrimination ?

Bro, as as former Sgt in the Marine Corps a fag wouldn't stand a chance in our unit. He would get beat down on a daily basis until he decided to find a way to get out. The Corps was and always we be built on a tradition of warriors to defend the Constitution of American and the Red, White, and Blue and everyone's freedom at home. It's a brotherhood that I take to heart and will take to my grave. I'm sorry but fags should join another branch and let us groundpounders fuck shit up. /thread

IDK... I've seen some pretty roided out fags. Still, an army of people vs. 1 is still overpowering.

My bro was force recon. Our boys got enough on their mind. Lets not try to mess with long standing policy in the middle of a conflict.

I see both sides of this issue, but I gotta tell ya in the heat of battle or even while training if I were in the service the only question I'd be concerned about is can the person next to me be trusted to do his job and do it well. I'd be much more concerned with the marksmanship of the guy next to me or his ability to shoot and maneuver then whether he's a pole-smoker, or not.

That said, I know there's a lot more to it when it comes to building those bonds of trust and establishing the relationship necessary to count on someone you're going to do battle with. If it does happen it will be a very rough transition, but I'd imagine the same fraternization rules that apply to male/female will simply be extended to all genders. The "don't ask/don't tell" policy will be adapted as a matter of personal discretion rather than orders from chain of command.

Hmmm

To be honest with you, I don't have a problem with it if gay people want to serve. I am mature and as long as you don't make it awkward for everyone else then I won't make it awkward for you. HOWEVER, some of the men I've served with do not feel that way and as such violence could be a huge issue.... Bottom line, there is no simple solution. I'm just putting it out there.

I agree with it, I dont see a better solution right now. I have no problem with gay guys or girls. I can see a lot of problems occuring if someone openly says their gay, IMO better to be allowed in the military and keep quiet then to not be allowed at all. I dont see a reason they cannot serve, their normal people with a different sexual orientation. As long as I dont get hit on I have no problem.

I don't judge Anyone based on their sexual orientation, but the Military is not the time or place to come out & say you're gay.

i think if your gay and want to be in a war you should be put in the front lines. this is to protect the straight men and women so we can still breed. and make a come back if we ever had to.
if we are all quear they we would all die off.

Hmmm... It is a valid point however. Plus it would allow the fudge packers a chance to earn some respect from us pussy lovin procreatin folks.

I don't agree. You shouldn't have to hide who you are. However in the military it seems the best thing to do currently.

If someone says "I miss my wife", why can't the same person say "I miss my husband/boyfriend?"
