Do you think one of them is using gear pt. 2

Haha.

Pedobear likes his women like he likes his scotch; 12 years old and mixed up with coke.

LOL. Ya know, I MUST be sick if I didn't see that coming. I guess I'm going to get put on that watchlist now. :(

BTW: Gym session ROCKED at first.....then I had to shut 'er down half way through as I was fighting the urge to hurl/pass out. :crying: Had Limp Bizkit remixes blaring a sexy blur of metal and rhyming all for naught. :(

whew glad that's over.

waiting two fuckin hours for tow truck $6/mo
1 gallon of coolant, 1 belt, and a water pump $45
cursing gm coz you spent 4hrs bent over your hood with hamstrings and back that were already on fire from this morning's workout priceless

D'oh! At least it was a simple fix. :) I'm still chasing down an electrical issue in my wife's car that continues to eat her alternators like they're candy.

See, there's a silver lining to everything! :spin:

What's happening to the alternator? Bad ground connection, bad bearings or coils in the alternator, drains in the electrical system?

Something is eating the voltage regulators and even burning out the windings on one of them. I'd say it's the shit quality of the alternators, but after the fourth one, I'm pretty sure the QC can't be THAT bad. I suspect that somehow AC is being allowed to ride back in on the ground; but I should hear that in the radio as interference or "alternator whine". It's truly baffling to me as the charging system isn't THAT complex. The car runs great for a few months, then the battery light starts to come on intermittently - then *poof* alternator dead. I've replaced the battery, terminals, wiring harness, and of course the alternators.

The only thing I haven't replaced is the serpentine (which is due), but I can't see it doing that as I get a nice 14.4VDC reading when everything is kosher. That and I haven't heard the belt slip at all, which is usually a good warning sign... :dunno:

You're not going to get 4 bad alternators in a row that's for damn sure unless you have horrible luck! Have you checked to make sure there's not more than one alternator size for the vehicle, some have multiple amperage options depending in the model.

My brothers car has the interference and it's been running on the same alternator like that for years now. What RPM are you getting that 14.4V reading? Under load or idle? Have you tested the battery voltage after running the car for a while to see if the voltage on the battery drops below 12V?

The only way a serpentine belt should kill an alternator is if it's stretched out A LOT and not turning it correctly but then problems with the ac, power steering, water pump would likely surface too. A bad tensionor pulley might also do that but again more than electrical problems would show.

Electrical was never my forte in the automotive field but I'll run a few questions by my dad and see what he thinks. Love having a mechanic for a father :D

In fact there are two amperage models for her car, I learned that one the hard way as the higher amperage model won't fit. ;)

I'm seeing 14.4VDC at both idle and while revving the engine. If I turn on the lights and accessories, the voltage dips down to 13.8V give or take, and then the voltage regulator does its thing and brings it back up. When they start to go out, I do notice that it will dip below 12V unless revved - but that's to be expected as that regulator isn't doing its thing anymore.

That's pretty much my line of reasoning on the belts, but it's the only thing I haven't replaced that I can think of. The car ran fine for YEARS, and all of a sudden we're eating alternators. I'd blame the heat, but that should only kill the battery, not the alternators.

I'd love to hear what your Dad has to say. It's a 2005 Ford Focus if that helps any. Yeah, my best friend from high school was a whiz mechanic, I do miss having him around as I'm good with electronics, but suck at a lot of the other stuff. :p
