DOCS: Please read - elevated kidney values

Had some lab work a couple weeks ago.....everything looked good except for these two kidney values:

UREA NITROGEN 27 range 7 - 25
CREATININE 1.6 range 0.5 - 1.4
BUN/CREATININE RATIO is within range

The doc thought it may be from the creatine I was taking, along with the fact that I had fasted (no food or water for 12 hours) before the test.

So, he said drop the creatine, and get retested in two weeks, and dont fast this time. Well I did that this past weekend and he just called me and said that the values didnt go down.

Now he wants me to get an ultrasound, do some 24 hour urine analysis, and possibly go to a specialist.

He said not to get too worried, its only slightly elevated, and that some docs would probably just ignore it. Hes a good guy and he really wants to understand why it is elevated.

He doesnt know I use gear. My question to you other docs, could my using Anabolic Androgenic Steroids (AAS) cause these types of kidney values? I always take all precautions, and my liver and blood values looked perfect.

He says dont worry, but I gotta admit, I'm shittin a brick already. Anyone else ever experience this or have any advice/input.

I appreciate you guys reading this long thread, look forward to some responses.

what have you been taking? I had about the same values on a Winstrol (winny) cycle. I don't know what was wrong but it scared the crap out of me. I got tested a while later and they came down. I had a sneaking suspision that it was bacteria or something in gear.

last cycle was QV Cyp and EQ.

this is so shitty, i was getting prepared to start my winter bulker in a couple of weeks.........and now i have this to deal with this. i really want to understand what this is..........and i hope to god that i don't have to quit using gear........shit, i've only done three cycles, and they've been mild at most.

bump for more opinions. DrJMW, where are you?

been doing some research..........

high BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen) levels can be caused by a high protein diet.

and as far as creatinine levels........i have read that the more muscle you have, the higher it can be............and that muscular male athletes can have above normal levels.

well duh, i fit in the above two categories..........so it makes me feel a little better as far as trying to understand what could cause it. but i'm no doc.........so can anyone else confirm this?

anyone else in hear ever have slightly elevated levels like mine? desperately bumpin for opinions.

just because you are muscular does not neccasarily mean that you will have Higher protein urea and creatinine. what it might mean is your kidneys cannot filter enough of the protein in your bloodstream. Which is conclusive to say that usually they are not working properly. OR it may be nothing at all. I would not want to leave it though. make sure everything is ok.
Good luck

Hey bro......next time fell free to PM one of us if you are that concerned ;) I missed the thread.

I would say based on the very limited amount of blood work/results that you should stay calm bro. It's highly likely that it IS due to the fasting and high protein intake (and MAYBE the creatine); however you need to follow thru with other blood/urine tests as your doctor designated to rule things out and be sure it is NOT kidney related pathology of some sort.

Urea is the chief nitrogeneous end-product of protiens/amino's metabolism and it is ONLY produced in the liver. From its production, urea travels thru the blod to the kidneys for excetion. The most serous implication of an elevated BUN is renal deterioraton (serious problem!!!)

Ther are other things that CAN raise BUN but gthe above mentioned is the most serious.

Keep us posted andf FOLLOW the doc's orders but from the report you gave us, don't over-sweat this.

:)

thanks for the replies guys, i really appreciate it.

one question though.............say they attribute the high BUN and creatinine levels to a high protein diet. If this is true, and its not the kidney not working right, will the doc let me keep eating the way I do, or overtime will this higher than normal value hurt me. If they tell me I cant eat a high protein amount.......well, I really dont wanna even think that, and what it means for my body :(

i am trying to stay as calm as i can until i get the other tests done. hoping to get them done as soon as possible.........not knowing what is really going on is tough on me.

i will keep everyone posted. wish me luck. and i'm still open for any info/opinions you guys have. thanks.

Like my bud DRveejay said be calm. Elevated BUN can be caused by high protein intake as can elevated urea, or spilling nitrogen. Often this can be corrected by drinking more water and eating smaller more frequent meals so the body can digest more of the protein. Eleveded creatinine is often a product of intense training, resulting in muscle break down. Blood tests really tell little of true kidney function. You will know a lot more after the 24 hour urine testing and other tests.

With the values that you posted the chances are in your favor that there is nothing seriously wrong. If you use tylonel stop.

liftsiron and drveejay, and everyone else.............thank you guys, you're really helping me stay calm about this.

i talked to the doc today.............i will be doing the 24 urine analysis this sunday, dropping it off monday and getting another blood test, not sure which one though.

again i will keep you guys posted and thanks for the support!

Renal

Many times your Bun/Creatinine will elevate while you are taking anabolic compounds and return to normal when you cycle off. You really need to tell your PCP exactly what you are taking so they can diagnose your condition accurately. Lower the amount of protien and salt that you are consuming and drink a gallon of water every day until your next visit. You will most likely be fine as most that take Anabolic Androgenic Steroids (AAS) return to normal after cycles. However kidneys should not be taken lightly and it is possible to perminately damage them. It is important to be honest with your doctor at this point so he can dianose accuratley.

PS

i have been off cycle since mid-july of this year. last cycle consisted of 500mg Test Cyp and 500mg EQ per week for 12 weeks. i didnt think it was strong enough of a cycle to ever do anything like this. i think if they were elevated due to the aas, they would have come down by now.

i will see what comes of this 24 hour urine analysis..........if the results dont look good, then i will tell the doc about using gear. i'd rather not have to tell him, but will if it is still not clear what is going on.

Good advice bro:) J Steel you levels are not that high, I'm betting that you have nothing to worry about.
