Eating a meal prior to sleeping.

Winter

PR Hungry
I've been having this argument with a friend of mine about eating a meal prior to sleeping. By prior, I mean like 30-1hour or so before sleeping. I don't see what is wrong with eating a good meal before sleeping, it prevents muscle catabolism, especially when in a bulking phase. His argument is that eating a meal prior to sleeping will stretch out your stomach more, thus deforming it and increase the possibility of disease/illness later on in life. I have been eating before sleeping for quite some time now, but have not noticed anything bad. The only side-effect I've felt when eating prior to sleeping is just an increased metabolism.

I'd like to hear from some of the more experienced guys here. & if anyone has any articles/statistics they have, please share.

I always eat about 30 min before I go to bed. Usually have 1/2 cup of cottage cheese, a protein shake, and 2 hard boiled egg whites. Sometimes I might throw in a bowl of cereal.

The best meal consists of slow burning fats and proteins. During cutting, try not to overdo the carbs. Eggs are faster buring proteins than meats or cottage cheese for example.

My question is really not WHAT to eat before sleeping, but as in if I were to eat a good amount, will it effect my stomach in any negative way if I were to eat something that would digest throughout the night.

I think you're over analyzing. After all this human evolution I highly doubt that eating a good sized meal at night will effect you negatively "later in life". By stretching it out? People can take a statistic and manipulate it in such a way to have you believe anything.

Does he think that the body stop digesting food when you fall asleep? Because if he does then he is sadly mistaken.

No, but he's afraid of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease later on in life.

SUMMARY:
Gastroesophageal reflux occurs when contents from the stomach, including acidic stomach juices, reflux (flow back) into the esophagus, the muscular tube that carries food and liquids down from the throat to the stomach. The most common symptom of gastroesophageal reflux is heartburn (or acid indigestion), a burning sensation in the center of the chest. Symptoms also may include nausea, gagging, cough or hoarseness. Gastroesophageal reflux disease is characterized by symptoms of acid reflux two or more times a week.

He's afraid of shit like this, but I personally don't believe this will happen if you eat like a few things at night. He understands that drinking a shake, a couple of boiled eggs and cottage cheese is OK, but he's afraid of eating say a sandwhich or two w/ the shake and the eggs and the cottage cheese.

Wow, I have never heard of someone saying if your stomach gets "deformed" you will get illness later on in life, I call BS on that because your stomach can stretch naturally for when you have a big meal;If it was so easy to "deform" your stomach then none of us would have the ability to bulk up by eating big meals. I eat at least a healthful, filling snack before bed, and I haven't had any problems either.

Thanks for the help.

And it wasn't me that was worried about stomach deformation, it was my friend. I was having an argument with him, if you read the entire post.

My bullshit detector just exploded

When properly bulking, you should always have a full stomach. I always do anyway. Lots of times, I eat and then go to bed immediately, and I have yet to suffer any negative effects.
